Turn a flashlight into a handheld burning laser

clamum

Lifer
DIYer Kipkay extracts the laser from a DVD burner and mounts it in a small flashlight to create a handheld laser burner that can light matches and burst balloons. Hit the play button to see how he did it. This project isn't for the faint of heart: it involves pretty specialized components and soldering, but that'll all be worth it when you're camping with your pals and you start the fire by pointing your homemade handheld laser at the tinder. For more info, Kip posted the laser mod over at Instructables, too. UPDATE: Several readers rightly point out that your burning handheld laser could pose a safety risk to humans, especially when pointed at eyeballs. Watch your kids, proceed at your own risk, treat as you would a weapon, etc. Thank you.

Doesn't look that hard to make. Pretty neat, though I could definitely see idiots getting hurt with it.

That was really KOOOL! Lets just amplify that by about 10 times, and install these instead of headlights. Wow, what a way to clear the road. Speedracer never had it this good! Now, must find a way to modify steering wheel so that I can sit back in my Taurus and push a button to start the laser!

What an idiotic thing to broadcast over the internet. The lasers used in DVD drives are extremely powerful even at long distances. They need to pull that video immediately.

It's not exactly hard to figure out. I've taken the lasers out and messed with them... never mounted it to a flashlight though.

I don't think it should be pulled but there should be more warnings about the consequences of building/using this thing. If someone still gets hurt after that, Darwin ftw.

Now I just need a frickin shark...

What "they" would that be? The master moderator for the entire internet?

Think of the children!

I like this idea. I already have a lens the size of a basketball that does a pretty good job of lighting fires in the day. Now the night fires can burn as well 🙂

Censorship is not the correct answer to people being stupid.

We should also ban all plastic knives, finger nail clippers, cell phone antenna's, and pencils because they can all put an eye out in the wrong hands. Hey, lets ban our own fingers too, because we can put our own eye out with it too. Yes, lets ban it all.

I think I might grab my old burner out of my last computer and give this a shot. It looks like awesome.

How does he know that particular laser is 250mW? Maybe a current source would be better for control & maximum power output. That thing is dangerous though. However it's not his fault if some dumbass blinds themselves with what they make.

Anyone know how much that collimator/lens assembly is? Or what model - that www.mfgcn.com website is one of the worst I've ever seen.
