I think double trouble is absolutely wrong here, and understands nothing about the history of Turkey.

I admit to not being an expert on Turkey or it's history, but I'd dare say that my understanding of it is at least on par with yours.

Lets put it this way, the coup plotters got busted early, the top Turkish military brass should of stopped it earlier and did not, and now they pay the price along with the other 250 Turkish Benadict Arnolds. If you plot treason against your own country, don't expect forgiveness. Not too hard to understand at all. At a minimum they will get tossed out of the Turkish military in disgrace.

Just like other situations where there are populist dictators or governing groups, they have to at some point start wiping out those who oppose them. In Turkey, the military was essentially the barrier to a more islamic government and society. It's easy to concoct some supposedly legitimate reason why they need to be removed or silenced (hey, como estas senor Chavez?). Then they can proceed with their move towards radicalism/dictatorship and all that fun stuff.

I don't see much different here, Turkey is on the same path. EU membership is now essentially toast, secular government is increasingly threatened by islamic nuts, and opposition groups will start to get squeezed.

Now what is wrong with you ? Chatting about Turkey going into an Islamist state ? No the country is democratically overthrowing the military-bureaucracy oligarch that is holding Turkey out of the democratic world since 1960'ies. The "story" that is kept repeating that its the military that keeps Turkey being secular. I have never heard such weak argument. If it is what it is then we are sure to turn into any day cause you can't keep it forever. This country has an old enough state culture, we can take care ourselves thank you !!

Hey good luck, I really hope for the sake of the people of Turkey that you're right. I doubt it though, the islamic nuttyness has already started bubbling up, and with no counter balance, I don't see what's going to keep Turkey from devolving, slowly or quickly.

AKP is a conservative party just like your average Christian-Democrats in Europe and/or Republicans in the States. We are seeing the rise of the right (conservatives, nationalist and those favoring religious values) all over the globe as a consequence of globalism. Republicans have been heavily influenced by Neo-cons in Bush administrations and now you guys have the Tea party which is even more fundemantalist in terms of nation and religion. Turkish politics are equally influenced by these trends but real power to the politics is usually better for the country then power to a group of Elite who can be easily controlled by outside forces (see Middle East) and of course such independence receives carefully planned criticism (in international media) by those who control the latter.
