I think double trouble is absolutely wrong here, and understands nothing about the history of Turkey.
I admit to not being an expert on Turkey or it's history, but I'd dare say that my understanding of it is at least on par with yours.
Lets put it this way, the coup plotters got busted early, the top Turkish military brass should of stopped it earlier and did not, and now they pay the price along with the other 250 Turkish Benadict Arnolds. If you plot treason against your own country, don't expect forgiveness. Not too hard to understand at all. At a minimum they will get tossed out of the Turkish military in disgrace.
Just like other situations where there are populist dictators or governing groups, they have to at some point start wiping out those who oppose them. In Turkey, the military was essentially the barrier to a more islamic government and society. It's easy to concoct some supposedly legitimate reason why they need to be removed or silenced (hey, como estas senor Chavez?). Then they can proceed with their move towards radicalism/dictatorship and all that fun stuff.
I don't see much different here, Turkey is on the same path. EU membership is now essentially toast, secular government is increasingly threatened by islamic nuts, and opposition groups will start to get squeezed.
