What a shit show. We should understand these are the things that will happen if we get more involved over there, esp if we try to enforce a no fly zone w/o agreement and cooperation with the Russians.

As everyone is backing different horses, that seems unlikely

This is why I don't favor more extensive US involvement. The probability that things could get even worse for all parties is quite real. There is no wining scenario that I can see.

Damnnn. Not good at all. Russia buzzes US airspace a lot, especially lately. Hell they buzzed us (a base on foreign soil I believe) with one of their big ass bear bombers not to long ago. Pretty sure we had the "right" to shoot it down, we were just smarter than that.

Incursions into US airspace do happen but the situation over there is way different. These are armed aircraft on bombing raids to an active conflict that the Turks have an interest in (which doesn't line up with the Russians). I fully expected something like this to happen once the Russians went in.

Their avenues for reprisal are limited however since use of force is off the table and the Turks could do them enormous economic damage and bottle up the Black Sea Fleet indefinitely.

10 warnings to leave their airspace before being fired upon. However, it appears that one pilot was shot and one captured... in Syria. So, if they were in Turkish air space when being fired upon, that wind must have been blowing toward Syria to take the pilot's parachutes there. Russia insists they were over Syria. Putin's comment makes it sound like they're not going to escalate anything with Turkey.

edit: appears it was indeed hit over Syria, but had been violating Turkish air space repeatedly.

I'm not sure of the speed of the missiles versus the jets and all that jazz but is it possible the missile was fired while the plane was in Turkish airspace and hit it after the pilot took evasive measures and ended up in Syrian airspace when it was hit?

And how many times the Turks have violated the Syrian/Greek air space. Yeah, the Kurds are likely to benefit the most from this.

Unknown nationality? Bullshit.
So they were supposedly in Turkish airspace for 17 seconds?
And the 10 times they were warned was in Syrian airspace.

Time to take off the gloves. Turkey is an ISIS supporter. Kurds are ISIS enemies. If US won't arm the Kurds, Russia should. And give them anti-aircraft weapons too, in case Turkey violates their airspace.

Russia is probably going to cut off oil to Turkey. And then Turkey will have to get oil from the Kurds....LOL

Actually Turkey and the KRG have good relations. Thing is Turkey can close down the Bosphorus to all Russian traffic. Might have to go look up the treaty on that one. It is very old, older than the UN or even World War 2. Believe it was created just after World War 1.

A2A missile was fired from a Turkish F-16 while the Russian Su-24MR was still in Turkish airspace. It hit the Russian Su-24MR after it left Turkish airspace, and was over Syrian airspace.

Turkey has been warning Russia for weeks to respect it's air space.

It's not like they suddenly decided to shoot it down with no warning. They were specifically told that they would be shot down if they did it again. What did Russia do?

What is interesting is that this probably happened in the last 8 hours yet we can already watch the video around the world. Makes the "TV War" whether Vietnam or the Gulf War look trivial in comparison.

“France and Russia have formed an alliance, though in doing so, they automatically caused Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire to declare war in return,” said Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook. “And, let’s face it, this whole thing really is the fault of the Ottomans when you think about it.”

The briefing then shifted to issues surrounding Afghanistan and Pakistan.

“There, the situation is much more simple,” Cook continued. “The US is fighting the Taliban by providing billions of dollars in military aid to Pakistan, which is supporting the Taliban. Basically, it’s like that scene in The Empire Strikes Back where Luke Skywalker thinks he’s fighting Darth Vader, only to find his own face in Darth Vader’s helmet. That’s pretty much what we’ve gotten ourselves into.”

The world wonders...
