Yeah, good for them...

Let's get rid of another middle-eastern dictator who kept at least some semblance of order and control over his country and pave the way for the creation of another sanctuary for the Muslim Brotherhood and Al-Qaida.

Maybe you're right; we should keep him. After all those kinda-darkies don't deserve to choose their own government, better to have them live under another's boot who knows how to treat them like the trash they are lest they get delusions of grandeur and them crazy thoughts thinking they should be self-determined. What nerve!

My take on this is that it was simply a warning to the Syrians to keep their civil war within their own territory. There will be no further military action from either side.

Also, I highly doubt that Syria wants a conflict with Turkey. Turkey could wipe the floor with Syria easily.

The thing is that this isn't the first such incident. Earlier this year Syria shot down a Turkish F-4 Phantom that was on a routine patrol.

At this point the Syrian government is poking a sleeping tiger with a stick, and won't like the results if they happen to wake it up.

This. Syria's government was probably saying 'oh-shit-oh-shit':

Syrian authorities are "offering sincerest condolences on behalf of the Syrian government to the family of the deceased and the Turkish people" and are investigating the source of the gunfire, according to the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

Now that the plan to topple down Assad by a civil war has failed, I suspect Turkey is being pushed harder to escalate with Syria. There will be a big anti-war rally today in Istanbul, it would be a political suicide for the PM to act more aggresive towards Syria.

Looks like Syria fell for Turkey's bait and now Turkey can drag the whole NATO into this, if they want. On the other hand, if Turkey can take out Syria by themselves, they can claim the biggest piece of the pie...

Russia says Turkey endangered lives by grounding plane

Note the subtlety of the article title

Nothing about piracy or the contents.
ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Moscow accused Ankara of endangering Russian lives on Thursday after Turkey forced a Syrian passenger plane to land and seized what it suspected was military equipment being ferried from Russia to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Russia is concerned about safety of passengers by Turkey grounding the plane

Is Syria going to attack the plane?
Is Turkey going to round up the civilians and send them to a prison camp?

Where does the safety issue come from.

Deflection from the real issue. :whiste:

Turkey got wind of contraband and got the plane stopped before it go to Syria.

With Iraq closing airspace between Iran and Syria, and Turkey now starting to play hardball...

I suspect there was much laughter in Turkey at this. Russia does not create the fear that the USSR did and for good reason. Russian leadership knows enough that no one will back it against the Turks.

Is there a downside?

Let's see if you can think it through.

Turkey is a member of NATO and historically a major ally of the USA.

Russia is a major supplier of arms to Syria.

Iran is a major supplier of arms and troops to Syria.

Russia and Iran both border Turkey.

Remember, WWI started because some penny anty duke got shot.

There's a downside to every conflict and that is innocent people get killed. While you are correct about a minor incident creating a cascade of unintended consequences the alliances and the Grand Games being played did indicate a high probability of a small match causing a great catastrophe.

The times and circumstances are different now. The chief contributing factor in WWI was the inability to disseminate information quickly. In other words while in retrospect it was easy to see cause and effect, what could be known by any power was limited. From their perspectives they knew of potential problems but had only supposition. Contrast to what you've said. We know who would support Syria and by what means. While you are correct, there are known considerations to examine. First, the Russians will offer limited help to Syria, but not because they back them. It's part of that Grand Game which powers use others as surrogates against the other great powers. It's been going on in royal courts for thousands of years, and extended to nations when possible. It's about power. Control. This is what drives such things, not mere money. The ultimate dream is to do what Thulsa Doom did in front of Conan, when he called a subject to her death off a cliff by the wave of a hand. That's Power.

Russia however knows that it's ability to exert it's influence is limited by others and it's own interests. It may support Iran for the same purposes it does Syria, but it does not trust it. The calculation is that they must work with the P5+1 at times even as it works against it. That is the Game- the challenge of balance.

Bottom line, Syria may benefit but not at the risk of Russias other interests. Support will be limited.

Then there is Iran. Their leadership backs Syria because it is a thorn in everyone's side. They engage at a less subtle level in the Game because they must. If they acquire power such as nuclear weapons their influence will be less direct and more expansive, but that is not today. Now they act with support, but they have limited capacity.

The result is that you are correct in that Syria will get some help, but what is needed is not munitions, but trained men. That they do not have, and with the West solidified in their condemnation of Syria no one will provide that. In short Syria is screwed and there isn't a list of players willing to invoke losses on their side to create a global disaster.

That's assuming the Syrian government controls its people.

At the rate they have to kill them, it appears not. Your scenario may already be the case.

Syria is not trying to go after Turkey.

Syria is going after the rebels who are using Turkey as a staging area.
They however are being careless and it is coming back to bite them.
