Turbo flutter?

I've got a 2000 Jetta 1.8T with ~145k miles on it. When I accelerate hard, normally where I hear the turbo spool up and "pssss", I hear a weird fluttering sound. It goes away when I let off the gas. Diverter valve maybe? Anyway I could test it to see if it's working correctly?

Could be a blown boost tube boot (either blown off or a hole)...? There are boots (short hoses) that connect the turbo to tube that go to the intercooler and from it to the intake... Should be a total of 4 but possibly more...? Any loss of power with the sound...?

Could also be the waste gate coming in to soon...? Dont think it has a VVT turbo...?

I can't really tell if there's any power loss. It's not like there was much to begin with.

Probably a leak in the piping between turbo and intercooler. (Google "1.8T pancake pipe", that's the most common place it leaks)

Or DV. Take it out, push piston with a pen and hold finger on the other hole. If the piston stays in place, it's good.

if it's a hiss that gets louder as you need more boost, chances are there's a leak somewhere.

my a4 1.8t had a similar thing going on. I swapped out my diverter valve for a Forged 007 valve and the problem was fixed. My stock valve was cracked. I also had a similar like problem when I forgot to toque one spark plug in the card and was leaking compress out of it

I assume its not tuned/running extra boost?

Either way a new DV is probably a good choice

Nope, it's all stock. Are those Forge 007s loud? I don't want anything obnoxious.

Flutter is often boost returning back through the turbo, so I would check the DV, too. If you get a new one and you aren't a hooligan, don't get a VTA one, get a recirculating one like the stock unit.

Yea unless you tune specifically for it, changing your recirculating unit to an external venting one would create problems in the long run since the system is expecting the recirculation.

If it's the problem I'll just get an OEM one. I'm not really looking to show off my massive 150HP.

It's not really a problem. I ran a Forge VTA DV on my Scooby for a while. The worst thing that can happen is you have a few cycles with less air than the ECU has measured, meaning you get a few rich cycles. Running rich in a turbo car is never a problem, running lean is.

Probably the DV. You have a few replacement options. You could use an OEM part for your car, the OEM part for the 225HP Audi TT, or an aftermarket valve.

I went with a used aftermarket valve, I think it was like 50 bucks.

Probably not the problem, but the crankcase vent valve hose isn't in great shape.

Sounds like a damaged/weak diverter valve allowing boost past, then closing, and opening again - etc.
