it did if you connected it to your motherboard

you could run your CPU at two different speeds, "normal" and "Turbo"

They did, back in the day. Well, inversely...on = normal speed, off = underclocked.

I have an old PC at home with the Turbo button. I'd always push it in and say some really dumb remark about going into Hyperdrive or something like that :p.

Yep. It actually came in handy when playing older games on a 486 or something, you could kick it down to make them more playable.

You HAD to take turbo off just so you could play games.

Lode Runner with turbo on was kind of like this...

Move. Die. Move. Die. Move. Die.
Repeat.

Turbo XT runs at 4.77MHz when the turbo button is off. When the switch is turned on, it runs at 8MHz.

yup, my old 166 ran at 145 or 146 with it on normal. i always thought it was a dumb idea, who in their right mind would ever slow it down on purpose?

edit:

only way i knew the speeds was the cool red LED readout on the front of the case that showed me the CPU speed. im still considering putting that on my new system, was cool.

The way many programs were written was affected by the speed of the machine.

yeah. if you played some of the old games on fast computers you would have to run a program that would slow it down. can't remember the name if it now though

Exactly. The turbo button is no longer needed, because Windows now does an effective job of lagging out the PC.

yupp,
I think it was to a legacy thing to make sure certain applications don't run too fast.

My PC after the Tandy 1000TX had a turbo button. It was the only way to make Test Drive (the car game) playable! Unless you were on a long stretch, then you could push it for a second. I always hoped my test drive would take me back to the future when I did that. Sadly, it never happened.

Heheheh... I remember when my friend got a screaming 486DX100, and we installed Wing Commander. It was impossible to play. So I fired up Windows, then ran Wing Commander from there and it was more playable. I think I ended up having him open a couple other things to slow it down enough.
