Turbo boost 2.0 on Broadwell-E

Can someone explain how it works? The available info is bit messy and unclear, with different sources saying different things.

For example i have seen i7 6800k to be said to have 3,4GHz base clock/ 3,6 TB,

but elsewhere 3,4/3,8GHz as well.

OBR in his review on PCtuning says the chip works at full load 3,5GHz...

so which one is it?

Additionally, 6900k is said to have base clock of 3,2, but boost 3,7? 6950x 3->3,5.... nowhere i have seen stated, how many cores actually work at that max boost frequency? All of them? Just one of them? And is there any particular reason, why sixcores have apparently only 200MHz boost, while 8-cores and 10-cores 500MHz? I assume its down to more cores, so these could be switched on/off in more steps.

The "Up to" is for a single thread. The max multi for all threads is always lower.

On Broadwell-E the advertized base clock seems to be during AVX2 load. In Anand review the 6900K appears to have worked continuously at 3.6GHz in non-AVX2 multithreaded workloads, despite the 3.2GHz base clock.

I wish the owners of these CPUs would dump the MSRs to find out the exact clocks they operate, depending on the utilized cores. Intel doesn't seem to provide this info for consumer CPUs newer than Haswell.

The "Up to" is for a single thread. The max multi for all threads is always lower.

Actually any half decent X99 mobo will have MCE so for a 6850K you can always run all cores loaded to 3.8GHz.

Do i understand this correctly, that in case of 6850K, it boosts all of its cores to 3,7GHz and one core (or maybe 2?) to 3,8GHz...then if TB3 is enabled, its 4,0 instead of 3,8?

Additionally, can you leave Turbo on while OCing? Thus OC the cpu to say 4,3 by setting the multi to 43x, but thanks to TB2 it would actually run all cores at 44x and one(or 2?) at 45x?

I have a 6800k and it's running stock at 3.8ghz on all 6 cores. Asus MCE in effect.

I did not install the TurboBoost 3.0 driver either, which is required for it to work, so this is not that.

Multi-core enhancement. I think other board mfgs use a different term.

Pretty much all Intel chips with turbo core can be run with all cores at their turbo multi with an overclocking board. My E3-1231-V3 runs with all cores at 3.8ghz while running a heavy load. A 4790S will run all cores at 4.0. etc.

You can basically set the BIOS to the turbo multiplier, and that will be the speed of all of the cores under load, provided cooling and voltage are adequate.

In the case of my Xeon, no cooling or voltage changes were needed. It just ran like a 3.8ghz Haswell i7 from the multiplier setting alone.

You will not get any speeds above the highest turbo multiplier, though. No core on my Xeon will exceed 3.8ghz, for example.

I've got the same cpu e5-1650v4 and Asus X99-E WS 3.1.
Stock clocks 3.6ghz. It will turbo up to 3.8ghz in most games. I've never seen it turbo up to 4.0ghz. I think Turbo Boost 3.0 needs to be enabled to get 4.0ghz on this cpu and i've never been able to get it working.

So you're saying that you've seen clocks other than 3.8GHz with Turbo enabled? The only way I see 3.6GHz is if I disable Turbo. With Turbo enabled, games, and any other kind of load is always 3.8GHz. Even if every core is at 100% load.

It will fluctuate from 3.6ghz up to 3.8 depending on what i'm doing. I definitely see 3.6 ghz quite a bit.

edit- Actually, I just tried encoding something in handbrake and it was running at 3.5ghz most of the time. Turbo enabled.

This cpu is all over the place. 3.5 up to 3.8..

hmm, yeah i'm running the very latest bios 3201. Pretty much all bios settings are stock. No xmp. Turbo enabled.
I had turbo boost 3.0 installed but ever since I updated to bios 3201 it doesn't even seem to be working at all. Says it's not supported or something. Don't know what that's about so i kind of gave up on it.

One other thing: With Broadwell-E, are the VID voltages being reported by HWiNFO actually VCORE? Because I thought VID was the target voltage level set by intel, and static for each clock state. These "VID" values are constantly fluctuating (subtly).
They are, yes.

But are the clocks also fluctuating?

Succesful thread is succesful. And congrats to Intel for making the whole thing so unpredictable and inconsistent, that nobody seems to know how exactly its supposed to be working :)

The Xeons don't have TB 3.0. It's supposed to normally boost to 4.0. Maybe turn HT back on?
