Turbine developers - "Consoles are superior for MMOs"

First I want a keyboard for console, then we can go from there. Since we have the keyboard, I now require a "one handed" controller to use along side it.

But what we (well, "you" poor saps) will get is a simplistic & generic version of wow crippled by the low gameplay quality standards of console. Versus the MMO's out already, and the picky standards of a lot of people, Turbine is going to have work damn hard with the competition that is already well established and growing.

The PS3 does support a mouse and keyboard, but game developers have not taken advantage of this yet, or they may be blocked from using them in game.

I would much rather play an MMO on a console rather than a PC, but I haven't been a fan of any console MMO's. If a company can release a WoW quality MMO on the PS3, I'd be all over it.

Yeah the keyboard is a killer. Who knows maybe they'll support one or use the voip headsets but yes that sounds odd to me.

Another aspect to consider, what happens when the console hits EOL? EQ1 is still going, seeing several consoles rise and fall. Likely, it'll be around to watch the Xbox 360 and PS3 get replaced as well. Is Turbine going to port their MMO from the 360/PS3 to the next gen consoles with an engine revamp to support the more powerful hardware? Leaving it on the older consoles will make it look incredibly dated VERY fast.

Directed toward BrownJohn, why would you prefer to play an MMO on a console over a PC? The console's controllers are going to limit your ability to interact effectively, voice communications would pretty much be required as you won't be able to type faster enough scrolling through letters with the controller. And I'd certainly hope they develop a far better quality MMO than WoW for the console.

Well I will have to admit one thing, it is hell lot more comfortable controlling my character on FFXI on pc with a controller than mouse and keyboard. My hand got tire pretty quickly with controlling with WASD control. It just feel so natural to controller charatcer movement with a controller.

At launch 99% of MMOs already look dated.

As for EOL. Both MS and Sony claim they are sticking to 10 year life cycles.

With the goal of getting you to simply buy a 360 or PS3 rather than waiting for their successors. With the current generation console's looking incredibly dated when compared to even last generation PC hardware capabilities, there's no doubt in my mind that both MS and Sony are designing successors to their consoles and likely already have hardware.

What do you mean by incredibly dated? The consoles run the very highest end PC game engines.

no keyboard? 5000 idiots spamming voice chat at once?
the only reason why I might consider it is because of the # of console owners.

Consoles would be superior to PCs for MMOs... market share wise. That is, until every developer and their dog makes an MMO for the XBox 720/PS4/WiiWii. Then when the potential market is as saturated as it is on the PC, only a few decent or free ones will survive and the rest will starve.

The reason for this is simply because it has untapped potential. Millions of people own consoles and will buy the next gen consoles. How many of them would pay for an MMO, but don't have a computer capable of running one (too old, Mac / Linux, etc.)?

In that sense, they're right. Otherwise, I think MMOs on consoles is a joke.

According to MMO charts, Final Fantasy 11 has been at a steady 500k subscribers for about 5 years now, though it doesn't say how many are ps2 and how many are pc. MMOs definitely can be done on console, they just have to be done a bit different than pc mmos.

Wow, console MMOs...I don't even know where to start.

Can you imagine the communication issues? What are they going to do? Have server-wide, built-in Vent?

Oh boy...you walk into a town, and instead of seeing annoying spam chat, you HEAR it.

"stfu noob!" "no u r teh noob, noob!"

Or, they will require a mouse and keyboard to play a console MMO, thus...making it exactly like playing an MMO on a PC.

Turbine...oh you mean the ones who made Asheron's Call (bust), Dungeons and Dragons Online (bust in the making...had to go "free to play" now), and LoTRO (mild success, but nowhere near WOW)? Yeah, let's listen to what these guys have to say! They are really relevant!

Dumb developers say dumb things. What else is new?

You haven't played FFXI. The keyboard/mouse controls are obtuse at best.

The game, however, was clearly designed to be played on a console. That doesn't make it fun or superior, though. FFXI was not a fun game.

What we'll get as console "MMORPGs" are games like Guild Wars and DDO, where the majority of the game world is instanced and the rest is a glorified chat room. Gameplay will resemble FPS gameplay and will suck immensely.

At least he didn't blame it on piracy :D

I'd like to hear him elaborate on these comments:

"Furthering his "ports don't work" philosophy, he also said that "grinding" is a no-no for console gamers, again suggesting that the future of MMOs is very, very different to the present. In explaining his "superior MMO platform" comment, Alexander mentioned that consoles are designed to be more accessible and playable, that they're more social, that the gaming budgets are higher and that the competition is stiffer. "

If you don't grind in an MMO I wonder what his game end goals would be? To me his comments sound like a new genre of MMO where MySpace meets Mario with no point other then mingling.

And as far as his sports comments go they've been on consoles since day one.

I'd rather cyber a furry in Second Life than mingle with other console gamers.

I don't think potential sales dictates superiority. The PC is the superior MMO machine, you can multi-box, check webpages, run a guild vent, communicate easily in game, remap controls as needed, customize the UI and the game can evolve with the computers to keep it running much longer than any single graphics generation. If we are talking "SUPERIORITY", then the PC wins it hands down. I won't argue with potential sales, as the consoles can win that argument regardless of game, regardless of genre.

FF11 was an OK game, however it could have been so much better if it was built for the PC in mind. Especially considering how often it recycled textures.

They could have built-in text chat.. select something pre-defined from a menu, then you wouldn't need to have the keyboard.

Since we're talking about console players, I assume the menu would be things like "Racial Slurs", "Sexual Orientation Slurs", "Racial and Sexual Orientation Slurs", "Other Sexual Slurs", "Calling Other Players Noobs", etc. You wouldn't really need a long list; it's not like console players have much to say.
