Tuna solid white albacore. "In vegetable oil". It was a trap.

LOVE tuna. I mix it with mayo, diced onions, salt, and lots and lots of pepper; and then I eat it with saltine crackers.

...so it's not very healthy.

We only buy oil. It pisses us off when we accidentally grab one in water. People who eat tuna in water should die.

Which is why you mix it with mayo...which is basically beaten oil and egg whites.

Either way, tuna salad is best salad. In both contexts.

I've tried the mayo mix with both kinds of tuna. It only tastes right with tuna that was canned in water, then thoroughly squeezed / drained.

I don't like canned water packed tuna. Tastes much more fishy to me. The foil pouches are another story of course. With those water packed is fine.

canned salmon is pretty good too. but you need the skin and bones, and those are harder to find. in water like tuna is the way to go.
I like canned fish (except for the oily smelly herring) and somehow managed to overlook canned salmon until several months ago. I purchased a big can (larger than tuna comes in) and was surprised by how much whole meat was in there, rather than the crushed and smashed pieces you often get in tuna, and it was pretty tasty, too. For wild caught salmon, the price was not really bad, either, considering the extra expense of canning.

indeed it is more like chunks of meat vs the shredded stuff of tuna. the ones with skin and bones are healthier. good stuff in the skin and bones. glad you found it.

Seriously, if you prefer tuna in water to tuna in oil, you should be shot. Tuna in water has no taste. I don't know why you want to pay the same price to get less. Tuna in water should be cheaper since they're saving money not having to use oil.

Tuna in water has tuna taste. Tuna in oil tastes like fucking nasty oil.

Oil is for cooking. You don't just drench things in it. Why don't we just drink oil? Because it's fucking nasty and only adds a desirable flavor when cooked-into things.

:colbert:

One more time: Fucking nasty.

You use the oil to cook. Ever make fried rice with tuna in water? It's crap. You have to add oil for flavor and to make it smooth. Tuna in oil saves you the step and you can pour the entire content. Tuna in oil is less healthy but it's worth it to get better tasting food. People who eat tuna in water and vegetarians can't be trusted with opinions about food.

Depends on what I'm using it for.

Water for tuna salad.

Olive oil for cooking.

Veggie oil ... never.

Grocery store brands of canned tuna are lowest quality. Smart and Final or any good commercial type grocer will have the big cans of premium tuna like Polar.

Packing in water is to fool idiots who don't realize calories etc. have to be for the whole contents of the can even though anyone with half a brain will drain the oil before using the tuna.

OTOH people get used to cat food quality tuna and think that is how tuna should taste.

Our family is very particular about our tuna. We have tried all the grocery store brands but found Kirkland Tuna at Costco the best. Its not minced like some many cheap brands and has a very good taste. Once you try it you will not be disappointed. It is truly the best and a big step above all other tuna brands.

Lately I've been making Quinoa tortillas. Quarter cup Quinoa flour, quarter cup water - whisk together & cook over low-medium. Smells funny, but tastes pretty good! 4 grams of protein per wrap (plus another 13g from 2oz drained tuna, which is about 1/4 cup) & super tasty with a simple tuna salad filling: tuna, mayo, diced onions, diced bell pepper, garlic salt. Plus bell peppers have more Vitamin C than oranges do, so it's win/win/win for taste/protein/Vitamin C!
