With more apps going native the bandwidth of EDGE should become less of an issue. No more waiting for web apps to load.

Yeah but have you ever checked the weather on the EDGE model? It takes like 20-30 seconds for mine to load up my city's weather. I might as well walk outside and look lol.

I'm excited about the games . . . I don't like syncing my school email to my phone so the email app as it is works fine with Gmail. getting AIM on the iphone should by awesome. I wonder if MSN and Yahoo messengers will jump on the bandwagon as well? Then there's the issue of the three month wait. I was hoping they'd already had the update so we can play with some apps already. oh well.

I'm pretty sure that's due in a large part to the 3G release. Business users..business apps...3G. It all makes sense.

I love my iPhone now, but the things that I have wanted to change about it were:

ActiveSync (#1 by FAR)
IM
3rd party apps
3G

Woo!

When 4-5 bars of service, it takes about 3 seconds on my iPhone. :Q EDGE for me is running around 180kbps... weather loads relaly quickly. Now trying to load the www.nytimes.com website - that takes a while.

3rd party apps, and games (Solitaire, Bejeweled, Chess, etc.), and a couple of IM clients are accessible under the installer.

The new installer program is easy to run - and easy to undo if you need to take it in for warranty work - and runs on all versions of iPhones. It's Open Source too:
http://www.downloadziphone.org/

We'll have to see how this thing holds up with the next firmware rev though.

These enterprise features sound great. Was there an ETA on them? 802.1x will make my life accessing WiFi at work MUCH easier.

You're lucky...it takes 10-15 seconds for me even on 5 bars. I'm in the Hartford area and it doesn't have the greatest reception, especially in buildings. I wish I could go back to Verizon but I won't leave the iPhone now, it's WAY too useful.

ETA is June. They released the SDK for developers to get a jump start on that.

Not sure what ActiveSync is...does it allow us to sync wirelessly to a computer? That would be pretty awesome.

Exchange ActiveSync is the name for Microsoft's push email system.

Basically the phone sends a ping to your exchange server. Your Exchange server holds it until you get new mail, then sends a reply to the ping to your phone telling your phone it needs to check for new mail...

I've simplified it a bit, but that's what it is in a nutshell.

You can also subscribe to mail2web.com and get a free eas account.

30% juice for app sales is insane. On the plus side, I'll assume that means more software will be free & software developers will try to monetize through support services.

On another note, are they really going to charge again for the next major iPod touch software update?

Sorry, Kaido, my :| was supposed to be a :Q. On Windows Messenger, a ":" with a "|" is some guy with big shocked eyes. I should have checked the message, but I was so sure that I got the emoticon thingy right, I didn't. :)

Sorry about my emote confusion.

And, yeah, I am lucky at my EDGE service. I was surfing today over lunch on EDGE and I'm honestly not too annoyed with it. It's not fast by any means, but it's pretty usable. I can get stock updates in 3-5 seconds, the weather is usually just a few seconds. Yahoo's home page loads in about 15 seconds. The NYTimes and CNN take more like 20-25.

Since I'm on a hacked T-Mobile iPhone, I am highly unlikely to be able to upgrade to 3G (without moving to AT&T, which I'd rather not). Based on some research and some guessing, I think the 3G iPhone is likely to be using the Infineon 6950 tri-band UMTS RF chip... which is 850, 1900 and 2100MHz... but not T-Mobile USA's 1700MHz (some day when they eventually deploy it). So, since I'm not likely to switch to AT&T, I'll be stuck with EDGE for a while. I guess I'm trying to convince myself to like it. :)

too limiting? I don't know of any other phone that has even close to 16 gigs. Sony has an 8 gig model that's coming out, but it will be EXPENSIVE (ie. more than an iPhone) 16 is a bit small overall, but your next best bet would be an Ericsson and most don't support 8 gig cards even.

Anyone know of any other phone besides the iPhone that has 16 gigs?
