OMFG NOES... my OC'd 2500k w/ 8 GB of RAM and bleeding edge GTX 760 won't be able to play this game, even though it's in the top tier of all systems that will actually be running the game at launch

Wait... A GTX760 is bleeding edge?!

I'm one of those people that is really bothered by frame rates dropping below 60fps, tearing frames and stuttering. BF3 64 man servers require a solid setup to pull 60fps, especially at 2560x1440. CPU's and GPU's both get hammered, so I really hope that BF4 is more optimized that BF3 was/is.

My i5-2500 machine choked bad while my i7-3770k@ 4.4ghz box is 99.9% buttery smooth with the same settings and same GPU. Just because task manager doesn't show 100% cpu utilization, it doesn't mean that you're not experiencing a CPU bottleneck. MANY times I saw GPU utilization at 60-70% on with CPU utilization around 85% and frame rates below 60fps depending on the map and where I was looking. No such problems with the i7 box.

To some extent it's a competitive thing for me -- I feel I have an advantage if I'm pushing 90+ frames on an OC'd monitor over the guy that averages 30-60 with lows dipping into the 20's. Plus it just looks gorgeous at higher resolutions/refresh rates.

A large part of my fun in BF is derived from kicking ass -- anything I can do to give myself an advantage (however slight or imagined) is worth it to me. It's why I fps/game on a PC.

Those of you who come in and say "My rig runs fine on xxxx with 1 GB vram blah blah blah" -- great, glad it works for you. I used to to do that too when I got started. But stop telling those of us who want it better than the rest of the herd that we're doing it wrong and accept that our perspectives are different.

The sarcasm is strong with this one.

Nothing wrong with this. Well said.

Yes it is. Work tech support for EA and see who calls in. It may not be bleeding edge on an enthusiast board, but it most certainly is compared to the dated hardware most of their user base will be trying to game on - which is entirely the point.

I agree with this. I just wish I was willing to drop $300 on a 7950, but with the next series coming and my 5850 being good enough for just about everything else, it's a tough call for me. Going to Fry's or Microcenter is dangerous for me. I get the shakes sometimes :D

You can pick up used 7950's for dirt cheap, it's a great bang for your buck card.

No way you would pay $300 for a 7950 today. You can buy brand new 7970's for that. You can find 7950's on sale for as low as $150 in some cases. But typically in the 200-220 range on sale.

Honestly I felt the bf3 experience was overall better on my 5850 than it is on my 670. So.. don't upgrade until you have to.. and I hated the drivers on my 5850... the good news is Nvidia's drivers are just as crappy.. So.. all is equal.

How is that? I have a 680 and a 5870 and have the oposite experience. Not that the 5870 is bad, but it's not even close to the 680

5870 cf=gtx 680

Doubtful in a game like BF3 due to the 5870's only having 1GB. Maybe if you have the eye candy turned down quite a bit. I went from SLI 570's to a single heavily OC'd 7970 and the 7970 wins hands down.

Maybe he was one of those folks who suffered from the stuttering associated with the 600 series,i had a Evga FTW gtx670 and this thing stuttered so bad in BF3,i went back to my 7850 and got rid of the 670.Luckily my gtx770 does not stutter.

Just the color, and aliasing, plus the pop ups are worse than on my 5850. I can't seem to make the color as nice.. and Nvidia seems to have a sharper overall texture which makes aliasing more noticeable.. The pop up may be due to my q9550.

I play BF3, it on my GTX 580 on Ultra, and it rocks. The game is not really intensive like it was believed for a long time, simply those rumors flew because of just peoples impressions they saw with beta test and videos online.
I had SLI GTX 580s playing it for awhile, but gave up one to brother and did not really notice anything difference in gameplay to me.

BF3 is pretty optimized for what it gives you, during beta i was rocking a highly overclocked 9800gtx and i remember 1440x900 medium no MSAA being pretty playable, anything higher settings or resolution wise not so much cause of the vram wall just being slammed.

Just hold out a little while longer then make a nice new build, or get a HD 7950 now for $200 then use it in a new build... Think I would get the HD 7950 :)

I am still not sure whether keep to saving for a new generation card or not. Realistically I am probably going to have to stick with 1200p for a few years, so I might not need more horsepower. Unlocked 7970 with at least 2GB might really be totally enough...

I'll come right out and say it. GTX 780SLI is the only real option for BF4 currently. All else will result in nasty FPS dips according to the slides we've seen. It showed a 690 getting 50fps. You can bet that dips to the low 30's.
Vram is an issue, but so is GPU power and 780SLI fits the bill for Ultra @ 1080p with 4XAA. The real ticket will be AMD's new offerings which should improve the price/performance offerings on both sides for this performance segment right at the time of BF4 release. What takes $1,300 to get today, will cost maybe $900 before much longer. BF4 will be a $1,000 game for me.

Crossfire HD 7970 would work, I am just going to have to turn down some settings I think...
