Trying to use a linksys router as a switch

Howdy fellas,

I'm trying to find a way to get this to work: I have a spare router since I replaced it with a wireless. I don't have any wireless devices, but all my roommates do, so I just run wires into my room still, but I'm wondering if I could get away with only running one patch cable into my room and splitting it with the old router, that way I can plug in 4 computers in here.

Is it possible to admin both routers and everything? I gave it a shot, disabling the dhcp server on the one I'm trying to use as a switch, but it didn't seem to work.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for reading!

There is nothing to administer on the second router. By disabling the DHCP server, and pluggin your ethernet cable into one of the LAN ports, NOT the WAN/Internet port, you turn that device into a switch. If you are connecting to the LAN side you should see a link light and possibly an activity light if the LED's are there for it. If you see neither then your ports are probably not auto MDI/MDX and you'll need a crossover cable, not a regular straight through Cat5 cable.

buy a wrt54g and use it as a wireless bridge which you can plug your computer into. That way you wont even need to run a cable
