The issue is the drivers for the motherboard chipset. If the USB ports, aren't working it's not "impossible". make a USB recovery drive and reinstall 10, selecting "Upgrade"

Please tell me how, if my kb and mouse don't work. I'm working on an Wxp laptop right now that has trouble downloading stuff to flash drive or cd/dvd.

If you make a bootable USB with the media creation tool, the Windows 10 boot of the USB will doesn't need the drivers to boot and when booitig, the new OS will probably figure things out. Google adding drivers to a HD for swap or similiar. You can take the HD out, put it in to a working machine as a second drive and add the Drivers to the right place in the Windows directory so they're found when you boot

I do have a W10 dvd, which I used for the original W7 to W10 conversion in July on the bricked machine. I'll play around with it.

Just tried to boot from the W10 dvd. It wouldn't. Went right to the unusable restored W10 desktop, with no means of input. Do you folks think Macrium's Redeploy is a good solid bet for a fix in this situation? If it is, I'll gladly spend the $70.

To get redeploy to work, you would still need to boot off DVD or USB. It sounds like your computer might be set to boot to the drive first, so neither is going to help you until you get into the BIOS and change the boot order.

My w10 pro, 32 bit, Macrium Reflect image (free version, no Redeploy), that I desperately want to restore, is on an external hard drive. The target pc is a w7 home Premium, 64 bit Gateway, which will be in factory default condition, from which I will boot from dvd. Unless I'm mistaken I believe Redeploy will solve the problem. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Many thanks for your patience folks.

Another forum suggested Aoemi Backupper, a FREE imaging program that will restore to dissimilar hardware - the so called "bare metal restore". Anyone have insight on this? The price is right. If it fails, I can always return the target computer to factory default.

From their page you need the $50 pro version to restore system to dissimilar hardware.
Also doubt it can read the proprietary Macrium Image - if that is all you have left of the old one.

Exactly how bellied up is the original PC - what happened to it anyway?
SSD?
M/B?
CPU?
Graphics card?
P/S?

Were you able to get the Win10 DVD to boot yet ?
- It sounds like you need to create a new verified bootable DVD or USB

Did you try running the ImgToVHD program?

Their free version definitely does offer the restore to dissimilar hardware. As best I can tell, it's the original ssd that flaked out. I believe the mobo went too. I tried to restore my image to the original machine, using a good hd, and it wouldn't boot. Perhaps my image is bricked. The image to vhd appears to be over my head, or maybe i'd nee a LOT of hand holding.

Yeah I have a feeling you may need to get the Win10 DVD to boot in the end, in order to ultimately fix this by running "repair".

If going the VM route:
I've never run the Macrium ImgtoVHD but it should be just a few clicks and a lot of waiting.
Hopefully you can then just create a VM and point to it for the HD image. It's not rocket science :)

How bout a miracle? Pulled the original out or the closet, and for the umpteenth time, tried to clean reinstall W10 from my dvd. Previously, the reinstall has crashed. just now, it is working. I'll let it finish, and when done, I'll restore from my recent Macrium image. Wish me luck.;)

If the W10 reinstall works , be sure to create a built-in System Restore Point
-before running the Macrium restore

Edit: on second thought the System restore would be useless - if the Macrium restore overwrites the whole disk.

It's better to do a full backup to an external disk before running the Macrium restore

Reinstall worked!! Currently downloading fresh copy of Reflect so I can image it to my external hd, BEFORE I try to restore my long lost (3 weeks) image, with all my lost stuff.

Holy Batworxs!! It worked!! My ORIGINAL comp is back, with my desired restored Reflect image. I don't know how or why. My clean w10 reinstall attempt was what I thought was a futile, total waste due to flummoxed hardware, which I was unable to totally id. I had already tried it and failed about 30 times. I guess 30th time is the charm. No clue what made it work this time. Can't think what I might have done differently. Donor computer is now a spare, perfectly working default Gateway, W7. If the friend who gave it to me doesn't want it back, I'll keep it in the back of the closet for the next emergency.

 Many thanks to you folks who chimed in in an attempt to help me with this problem. It's apparent the paid Macrium Reflect would have probably been my next step if had been forced to use the donor computer.

Merry Christmas, L'Chaim & Shalom
