Trying to pick a Major and school sucks.

I graduated from high school in 1999. From there I immediately went into college at DeVRY, majoring in EE. I quickly found out that is way more technical then i wanted to get. It wasn't exactly hard, just not what i thought it would be. So needless to say I didn't stay there too long. I decided to wait a few years before going back, just to give myself some time to figure out what I wanted to go to school for. And to have some fun time for myself. Fast forward to today. For a while now I have been starting to think about what I want to go back to school for, and where I should go. I am in Columbus, OH BTW.

I was thinking of going back for something in the computing field. But as I said I did not like the depth of EE, and I am not too excited about porgramming either. I know I could go towards networking, but what else is there? Also while browsing websites for colleges in the area I saw ITT tech has an Information Systems Security degree that looks somewhat interesting.

I also have a few years of experience with AutoCAD and drafting. I have considered architecture as a major, but I think to be content in that type of job I would actually have to be designing buildings or houses, or maybe some other large structure. ANd with my luck I would be the guy that gets stuck designing porta potties or dog houses or something.

I also would love to get my private pilots license, but I don't really think I could turn that intoa career as i am not willing to fly commercially.

Any non sarcastic comments are appreciated. Thanks

First I would forget about ITT and the such. Very rarely have we found someone that we have interviewed from there that measures up. They just aren't as prepared as someone with a 4 year degree.

If you can get in, I would look at Ohio State. It is a good school and right in your neighborhood so you wouldn't have to move. If you are interested in computers but not programming, look at networking and operating systems and see if being a Sysadmin or NetAdmin might interest you.

Generally speaking, interviewers are jobs, from what I've heard from them, look down upon schools that advertise on TV (ITT, DeVry, etc.)

Well I guess I can understand that.

Looking at OSU's site, about all i can see computer wise is CIS. AM I missing the other fields of study? What other schools do we have around here. Col. ST., Franklin, ?

You won't do any better than OSU in that area. I am sure they have CIS, CS and Computer Engineering. Which you go with really depends on 1) how much you like math 2) what you really want to do.

Sorry I missed this upon initial skimming. That does kinda put a damper on things. Personally I think it would be pretty cool to fly commercial jets but it is a hard field to get into and you have to put in years of high $$ training and low $$ jobs before you get there.

Graphix man, anything that has to do with graphix, computer graphix, animation, at least if you end up working for no one, you'll have a super cool website. (or other people, moms and pops, that would be in need of a super cool website that would need some one like you ;)). Or you can join me and we'll make Shrek XII. :D.... hmmmm..... Dream Works... hmmm..... dreaming about working there.... leave me alone.

Well I'm not to interested in programming or the very technical parts of a computer, so what does that leave?

If you go into the Airforce, they are your training. My step brother was in the Airforce for 8 years flying the uhh, umm BIG planes. :D He got a job as an airline pilot making 200k a year after he got out. Something to consider.

OSU is a state school, you shouldnt have a problem getting in. Dont expect ANY credits to transfer though.

Just want to point out that if you're interested in computers, there are LOTS of things that use computers but aren't CS or EE.

Music and animation/movies/etc comes to mind. Also ditto to the dude who suggested graphics. All of this stuff requires lots of computer smarts and you'll have the big-bucks school machines to play with.

On a completely different note, try something in the medical-imaging or medical-accounting fields. Sure, you have to take a bunch of medical terminology courses, but you'll find work when you graduate.

Pretty much any field these days uses computers in some way, and would allow you to do computer stuff without having to learn that pesky math or whatever it was you didn't like at DeVry. OSU has a pretty wide range of majors. Pick something that sounds like fun, and then fit computers in, whether as a minor or as a specialty.

WTF is that supposed to mean. I did quit going to DeVry. Not because it was too hard, or anything. JUst because it was boring to me, and not what I wanted to do. The math wasn't the problem. I just don't want to get as technical with a computer as EE gets. I am not interested designing circuit boards. I just like messing with computers. I think I could get into networking, like as a Systems administrator or something like that. WHat kind of degree would help me get a job like that? I know columbus state has a Associates in Microcomputing Technology that is geared towards networking. But from what I have heard so far an associates degree from a community college isn't worth much.
