Trying to open picture files with no extension

So today I got a cd with some image files on it from someone, the problem is that the image files have no extension. I tried most of the ones that GIMP supports, but no luck so far.

Any tips on how to figure out what type of file this is?

I would just copy one of the files to the hd and try re-naming it with an extention, such as ".jpg", and see if it will open. Try several extentions if you need to, i.e. .bmp, .gif, tff, etc.

Good Idea.

Right-click on one of the pictures and choose "Open With". Open the file with Notepad. Look for one of the items listed below at the beginning of the random characters that Notepad gives you.

This list is by no means comprehensive (and might not be 100% accurate) but it might give you an idea of what type of files they are:

JFIF - JPEG
BMF - BMP
GIF - GIF
PNG - PNG
AVI - AVI video
II - TIF (TIFF)
Camera name - Probably RAW

It won't tell you the file type, but if they actually are image files, you can right-click the files and open them with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Thanks for the advice! I tried and the problem is that it actually froze notepad! I tried wordpad and that worked. At the beginning I see "MMXPR3". Does this mean anything?

That's a Quark Express file. It needs an extension of .QDX and you'll need a copy of Quark to open it. I did some searching on Google and couldn't find any other application that is able to open those files properly.

THANKS! I downloaded the trial and exported it as a .pdf!

Sorry for hijacking this thread, but I have a similar problem. I did what you said and opened the file with notepad, and the first 4 letters were FATZ. What file extension is this?
