Hey I got an iPod 40GB mp103 4th generatoin with the scroll wheel... I basically am trying to figure out how I can make it so I can use it like my other mp3 players where I dont have to use iTunes... I can't find anything online relating to my type of device so figured I'd ask here.

Rockbox is the best alternative firmware out there and it supports your ipod. I'm not positive, but I'm 99.99% sure that if you flash it then it can be used without itunes. However this is a total firmware replacement so it also changes the look and function a little bit. It's quite customizeable though so you can still skin it to look like your ipod always did. Plus it adds some great equalizer control and boosts the sound quality a ton. Worth checking out IMO.

THANK YOU so much! that was exactly what I needed and it worked perfectly on my device.

Organizing your MP3 player in iTunes *is* normal.
What you are looking for is a way to make your iPod into an abnormal MP3 player.

No, he is looking for a 'normal' MP3 player, but an 'abnormal' iPod

This. The ipod is the only player on the market that uses itunes, so it's the outlier here.

His (patranus') argument may have been that given Apple's share of the MP3 player market, whatever it does is considered normal, and anything else is abnormal. So, by that logic, the iPod is not the outlier, even though in terms of makes and models of MP3 players, there are more that don't use iTunes than those that do.

lmao I just want to drag and drop my files to the ipod and be done with it. Going through iTunes would be a pain in the ass... I dont have to do that with my other mp3 players.

The iPad has a 75% market share.
iTunes has something like a 90% market share which is essentially saturation.

Yes, not using iTunes, especially with out iPod is the exception to the rule.

It's a bloated POS on a Windows based platform. Can't blame the OP for not wanting to use it. I think it's Apple's "fuck you" to Windows users, for not having a mac.

It's not like the deliberately make it slow, they just don't spend the time to optimize it. So it's KIND of an F U to windows users, but not so direct. Itunes on macs works so much better.

lol it doesnt matter at all. What matters is that itunes is slow and very inconvenient especially when I could just be plugging in my iPod and pasting my music and other media/non-media files onto the storage space.

rockbox wins

iTunes is the biggest piece of bloatware crap ever. I prefer to simply drag and drop files directly onto the device. iTunes is popular and enjoys heavy use because (for the most part) people are stupid as crap and could never figure out how to get songs on their "fashion accessories" without it. I will never install iTunes on my box ever again. It is the RealPlayer of today.

I don't entirely believe that. It's not that people can't figure it out (everybody uses flash drives without issue) it's that the ipod itself is so popular and it just so happens to require itunes. If it allowed a drag and drop mode as well I'm sure a ton of people would use that instead... maybe even the majority. Either way I don't believe it's the consumers fault here, they simply were never offered a choice one way or the other.

without itunes or another piece of software how would you only put unplayed songs in certain genres onto your device, have them delete after being played once and a few you mark to be left on your device. all automatically.

on itunes it's called smart playlists. forgot the zune name.

say you get 50GB or more of music from someone and you want to go through it but don't want to manage it manually. create a few smart playlists defined by artist and play count and rating and it will manage it all for you automatically.
