What I am trying to do is get my and my brothers pc to be able to acess the net, and each others pc. I have a Cayman 2E-H ehternet router to use past the cable modem. I am lost when it comes to the address that I need to use to get on the web. When I go into the LAN settings that I have to acess the web, it is cc######-A. but don't I have to have a IP address if I want to conect the pc's to each other?

What steps do I need to do so that I can get the computers to see the internet once I hook them to the router? How do I get the pc to see the net through the router?
Oh, we are both using WinXP pro.

your broadband provider automatically assigns you an IP address based on computer name. so what you need to do is put that cc####-A number into your router and make sure it is set to DHCP (to automatically attain an address)

then, make sure it is set as a DHCP server, and plug your 2 machines in. make sure both winxp machines are set to DHCP in network settings.

reset your cable modem, and everything should come online

assuming both XP boxes have the same workgroup , you'll see each other and be provided with 'net access through the router.

Would you happen to know how I go about putting that C#### into the router? I looked on line, and did not find anything that tells me how to do it. The Cayman company has been bought by anouther company, and there support page leaves alot to be desired.

So once I put that number into the router, I should be able to just run it right off my computer, and just adjust the settings to my brothers pc right? Seeing as how my pc is already set ro run with the C#### number.

well, you have to use a web browser to http into your router.

take a piece of network cable and plug one end into a computer and one directly into the router

then, open a web browser.

the default address to access most routers is usually something like 192.168.1.1

you should see a page pop up...and you usually put in a default password such as 1234 or something like that.

then you can configure everything. have you ever done this?

i guess you dont' have a router manual?

No, I have never tried anythign like this in the past. I work on my computer, and a few at work... but it is just the basic stuff. Adding hardware, figuring out software. Things of that nature.

No, I do not have a manual. All that was in the box when I got the router was a router, and powersupply. :( I did search the web for some directions on it, but this was all I could find for the most part. http://www.netopia.com/equipment/pdf/cayman/2eh_qs.pdf and it says nothing about cable modems.

Argh! I do not see what it is that I am doing wrong. I go to the address fine, and when I try to put in the CC#### thing it tells me that it is not a valid IP Address. Am I suppost to make a IP address for it? and then make the same address in the PC?

I am following what the manual says to do, but it keeps saying IP address, and I do not have one.

you definitely don't put the computer name in where the IP address goes

there should be a separate box to put a computer name in

Would it help if I took screen shots of all the screens? That way you might be better able to direct me asto where I am doing stuff wrong?

Ok, I did the screen shot thing... the first picture is what I see when I forst go to the ip address that you asked me to go to. The second image is the window that comes up when I hit the save button that was on the first picture. The third picture is what I get when I select the Ethernet A (LAN) button. pictures
