Trying to learn Ghost...

OK - I'm trying to learn Ghost 9 (per this thread). I currently have three partitions on a new Dell laptop. Since this is a work computer, I would like to backup all three partitions, so that I could return to this initial state whenever I want.

I made a Backup of the drive to DVD last night - it took forever, and I got two "would you like to append to this media" popup's, and I just hit yes each time. Nonetheless, I ended up with a single v2i file that I can browse with Ghost, so I guess it worked.

I tried booting with the disc, but I dont think there's any boot information on it, so can I just restore while in Windows?!


When I choose restore drive, then the choose image on the DVD, it asks where I would like to restore the image to...well, there's three partitions, and I of course still have those three partitions on my HD...SO would I have to format the C drive to a single partition in order to test this restoration, or what? Very confused....

Is there another product I could try that handles this better? Arconis?



Again, what I would like to do is backup an entire drive, and restore an entire drive...just once, so I can come back to it...system files, everything...

Make a ghost boot floppy, RTFM.

So I should make a bootable CD to DOS, and restore from there?

Yeah, that'll work. CD is good.

When restoring, just select the entire DISC. It'll handle the partition structure on its own.

Thanks kmr1212 - I know how to make a bootable CD, but how do I do one with Ghost? Is it just something where I boot from CD, then swap with the DVD that has the Ghost image?

Not sure about Ghost, but you should have the option to make bootable rescue discs (or something similar) that would allow you to boot into the Ghost interface and restore the image(s) you made previously. At least that's the way it is in Acronis True Image v8, so I expect Ghost v9 to have the same feature.

Moved to Arconis and everything worked beautifully! That's the way it should be! I hate Norton...

Thanks all...now I can install Linux, games, have fun over Xmas break, etc, and hold restorations of old sessions for when I work.

Yup, after using Ghost religiously for 3+ years, I've recently switched to True Image and love it.
