I'm such a n00b when it comes to this website crap

I'm trying to setup Gallery on my website and I'm not having too much luck :(

I got to the point where it says I need NetPBM installed before I can go on. It's not installed and I have no freaking idea how to do it. The Gallery website says:

Gallery prefers NetPBM version 9.9 and up. You can install just the binaries Gallery needs from Gallery on SourceForge.

So I've got the file netpbm1.1-gallery1.0-linux2.2-redhat6.2-intel.tgz downloaded and unrar'ed it with WinRAR. It gives me some Intel file that I can't unzip, so I would imagine I need to install it on the server but I have NO idea how to do it.

Can anyone help me out? I did find this website with instructions but it's so confusing :(

yeah, it's on Linux.

I thought the file I downloaded was just zipped, so I unzipped it with WinRAR.

Doesn't mean it's for Windows, does it?

The server I will be installing this on is Linux. (AddAction.net is my host)

I'm on WinXP.

Use SSH and do everything on the linux box. oh yeah, issue a ./configure --help in the directory where you extracted the tarball

Having all the files on your local PC isn't going to be much help first of all.

Wow, I really appreciate that, it was totally unexpected.

However, the password I have for my site is the same pass for a couple other things (AT user info :Q) so I'm gonna see if I can change the pass quick.

Again, thank you for the offer!

I assume this is a redhat or mandrake box since you downloaded a redhat binary? First a binary is already compiled so you just need to install it. Upload the file you extracted from the tgz

now: rpm -ivh netblah.i386.rpm and its installed

beats the snot out of me if it's redhat or not.

I didn't see a *nix file so I just downloaded that one.

Nothing, it just makes all the previous posts pointless because cpanel has it's own way of installing things. Makes it a lot easier for you.

Soybomb, he's not admin, he can't install anything.

He doesn't need to be root/admin to install programs. He can just install it locally to his account.

EDIT: Bah just went to the addaction site and they use cpanel..........

http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/help/id168.htm

I click on the file in File Manager, go to Extract File, and It comes up with a window and says:

netpbm1.1-gallery1.0-linux2.2-redhat6.2-intel.gz
File Type: gzip compressed data, from Unix

but nothing happens  :(
