trying to install a cdrw into an ibm netvista...

hey all

i'm trying to install a kyphermedia cdrw into an ibm netvista for a friend, and it already has a cdrom that came with the machine. when i first plugged both into the computer, it booted fine, windows recognized cdrw, etc. however, neither of them would read any cds. so, i figured the cable was bad, and replaced cable. still no work.

then, i unplugged the cdrw and put back in the original cable (original configuration) and now the normal cdrom wouldn't read any cds either. however, when i leave a cd in the cdrom and restart, it reads cds fine. when i restart without a cd in the cdrom, it doesnt read any cds after i put one in.

so then i tried hooking up just cdrw and windows recognized it, but it still wouldn't read any cds.

cdrw and cdrom are on cableselect, cdrom is master / cdrw slave. when plugging both in individually, i tried them both on master and slave, but still the same problem as described above.

machine is running winxp.

any help or suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated. at this point, i'm just trying to get the cdrom to work as it was before and i'm gonna give the machine back to my friend and tell him to get the cdrw installed somewhere. however if you solutions gets both working, yay for you =)

thank you!

Possibly the ide channel might be failing or connection of said ide to the mobo might be. I usually test drives in a known good working comp before putting them in someone else's machine to narrow down the variables. Goodluck on your mission tho.

Yeah maybe try a different computer to check the drive. Also double check your jumpers to be sure. Make sure the drives show up in the bios and maybe you can try booting to safe mode. Might very well be the ide channel though. I recently had some trouble with my brother's machine where the secondary channell started flaking out on me after I installed XP. Then it wouldn't boot into Windows anymore. I had to get a new board.
