So I took a few typing tests and it seems that I type about 50 WPM (although I don't like the keyboard I am typing on at all), net 45 wpm. What are some ways/programs that I can use to increase my speed?
 
Do you know how to type properly with Qwerty or Dvorak layouts? If you do, then it's a matter of practice. I hesitate to say that it's also related to "natural" ability, but some people seem to simply have more dexterity in their fingers and a greater ability to process the information.

 
I'd just find a newspaper and practice typing everything. Think I averaged 50-55 last time I checked in grade 9 "intro to computers" class.

Don't see why you need to be faster than 50wpm. Unless you're a professional secretary/typist/plagarizer, it's rare that your thinking would be able to keep up.

If you type a lot, like most of us, you've probably reached your potential. Have you tried various styles of keyboard? Your hands and preferences may be more well suited to one type than another. Another factor is size, there isn't a whole lot of variance here due to the small benefit vs. the additional cost of several sizes of designs and molds. If your hands are too big or small for your keyboard you're probably not typing at your best speed. Last, I think a higher finger length:girth ratio probably corellates to higher dexterity. If you have stubby fingers you may be at a natural disadvantage.

I have big but thick and stubby hands. This has pretty much pwned my attempts at playing guitar, though I type so much, thus get so much practice, I can clock in respectably at as high as 100wpm when I'm really trying, though I probably only do 60-75 when neffing or chatting with friends.
 
I'm happy with the 65-70 wpm. But truthfully, I only type that fast when I'm transcribing something. If I'm typing something on the fly, it's probably closer to 30-35 wpm.

I can't stand those type of keyboards.
I use the standard old style straight in a row layout.
I do have large fingers though so I have to be careful of getting a keyboard that places the keys too close together.

I type about 80WPM and the thing is I nearly failed typing in high school.
We had typewriters and if you made a mistake it was rather permanent.

I also had started using the keyboard on early computers like the TRS-80 and commodore vic20 so I already had my own method when I started taking the class and just never could adapt to the method they teach. I use all my fingers on the left hand and only 3 fingers on the right. It works for me.

To improve speed I would type out something from memory, like what you did for the day, or turn on the tv and use it for a dictation source.

i redefined my "home row" position to be two thumbs on the spacebar. problem (mostly) solved
 
You just have to type more. I like learn2type.com/typingtest, it's randomly generated passages, usually based on Aesop's fables.
 
I tried one of those online test and I got an 82 WPM with an 98% accuracy. I had no clue what I typed since I haven't taken a typing test since probably high school!
