Trying to identify a secure wireless AP with 3 mile range

I have a customer that wants to utilize a vehicle mounted PC as a mobile point of sale device. The vehicle will operate within 3 miles of a base station.

The customer does not want to deal with a cellular WWAN service.

What equipment should they use:
a) at the base station
b) on the remote computer end

any ideas?

they need to be able to have line of sight from more or less everywhere within 3 miles between the base station antenna and the roaming antenna....so, good luck with that.

if you can do that, then youll need some pretty decent wireless gear

If the application doesn't need very much bandwidth, you may be able to use 900MHz equipment, which is more tolerant of obstructions to RF line of site.

They are looking at a Motorola PMP320 WiMax 3.65Ghz base station and CSM36320 Subscriber module. It just seems like overkill, so I wanted to try to search for some alternatives that will fit the bill.

Insanely expensive and 3.65ghz is psuedo-licensed. Not a good option, imo.

Ubiquiti has some 900mhz point-to-multipoint stuff that is inexpensive and will get you 3 miles and will be better able to penetrate obstacles. It would be my recommendation. Rocket M900 and Airmax sector antennas and Nanostation for CPE...probably get out of it with full 360-degree coverage for a greater than 3 mile radius for about $2k. And you don't have to wait 75+ days for FCC approval.

Ah, thank you!!! I forgot about Ubiquiti. I knew there was something out there. It's been 2-3 years since I last researched this stuff.

3G and a VPN? Seems like the easiest and cheapest option
