been using it since it came out...its great
like a lot of people mentioned, the stability is great...but then win2k is already pretty stable (at least for me)
i like how it boots up real fast compared to win2k
the new ui is kinda cool, but i switched back to windows classic...i'm more used to it

I'm still using 98 and have no desire to change to 2k or XP. I either must be lucky or doing something right because I haven't had any troubles with this OS at all. I'll probably go to XP on my next machine though.

You know, that's what I thought. I'd run 98 for days without having to reboot. But XP never has to be rebooted unless I'm changing hardware, or an install makes me reboot.

Conversely, why would anyone pay $80 for an OS when you can get it for free?
Anyway, stick with Win 2K - I've never seen any reason to switch. The new GUI just confuses an old guy like me 😉 and I havent found anything XP can do that 2K can't.

It's not a question of ability. It's a question of performance. XP gives me better frame rates than 98. And 98 gave me MUCH better frame rates than 2K... That's why I dual booted.

As for "free." Sure, if you want to be a thief.

1. Get a corporate version from the internet so you don't have to ask MS's permission to change your hardware.
2. Your system looks kinda slow...you might have to turn off some of the bells and whistles to get good performance from XP.

If you're going to install XP at all, make freaking sure you install WinXP PRO and not HOME.

Wow, you're getting shafted. Pitt gives us a Full Version (not the upgrade) of XP Pro for FREE!

Good advice. I turn off the menu and window animations even on my P4 2.0A machine. There is a "performance" settings button in the "Advanced" tab of the "System properties" window. Click on it... I turn off everything except:

"Show shadows under menus"
"Smooth edges of screen fonts"
"Use Background Image for each folder type"
"Use Drop Shadows for desktop icons"
"Use visual styles on windows and buttons"

These settings work good even on the PII450 I gave to my GF's mother.

All the "fade" and "slide" effects are worthless, and really slow things down. Even on a fast machine, you have to wait for the animation to finish before you can click through. Turn them off and XP feels as snappy, if not snappier than all the previous OSes.
