I do gaming, modeling/rendering, and the occasional heavy number crunching.

Which chipset would you guys recommend?

Also, does anyone know when 650i Ultra boards are coming out, and will they have the high quality sound chips that are on the 680i and 650i+(Asus) boards?

I believe another month or so for Ultras.

The Asus 650i use a Realtek 883 HD codec & I expect that all the other mfrs will use similar.

I say 975X (will suit your e6600 fine and allow o/c) - BadAxe2 or P5W-DH

I'm building a core 2 duo E6400 rig for Vista, moderate OC'ing, and gaming with the nVidia 8800 GTX card. I'm still spec'ing it out, but I was looking at the Asus P5N-E SLI 650i. I've heard that it has problems though with memory and stability. Should I give it a shot? What's my best choice for gaming with the 8800 and moderate OC'ing?

Only get an nvidia chipset if you NEED SLI. Almost any P965 board will suit you just fine. They o/c well. Look at the...
Gigabyte S3 or DS3
Asus P5B-E
Biostar P965

They're all in the same price range of the 650i.

Thank you for explaining it to me so clearly. In that case, I will probably go with the DS3 or the Asus P5B-E because I've heard such good things about the DS3 and I like Asus. With the 8800 GTX, why would I need to go SLI? At least not in the next couple of years anyway.

Thanks again...

That's just it, you won't need SLI with that card. If anyone knows how to build something for an Intel chip it'd be Intel.
