Trying to decide on a audio setup

I have been reading articles and guides in order to find the system I want for the price I am willing to pay. I recently bought a 55" Sony SXRD and a Toshiba HD-DVD player (Ax-20 I think). I have been very happy with both. 1080p is glorius. Loving it right now. Now, I just need the sound to go with the picture.

I haven't the foggiest idea of which speakers and receiver to get. The choices are many and sometimes not very clear.

I do have to deal with the "WAF" issue but she has been pretty cool about letting me do what I want with everything to an extent. She doesn't want speakers that are too garish, and I agree with her. She doesn't mind tower speakers as long as they aren't too large (Polk RTi8 size are about as big as she will go for). The front channel speakers will need to be towers as she hates the stands and the TV has taken up all of the real estate on the console.
I think a deciding factor will be my current room arrangement. It's a large, open living room with a very high vaulted ceiling. The TV is currently sitting back against a wall (like most do) with opposite wall way off in the breakfast area. It's not a confined room by any means. No carpet, hardwood floors (don't know if that matters).

I was eyeballing a Klipsch RB-61 setup. I have liked Klipsch in the past. My father still has his Klipsch Heresy speakers from WAYYY back and they still sound great. Very impressive speakers. ONE thing I'm not sure about is the tweeter horn. They tend to be a little aggressive, much like my Pro media Klipsch setup.

That aside, I haven't had much experience with anything else besides what I had in my college days (does AIWA count?:D). I have gone to a couple of demo rooms to see what I like better but that really hasn't panned out since I can never get enough time to listen to what I want. I just get aggravated with the saleman/woman blabbering away and I leave.

The next issue is the receiver and I HAVE NO IDEA which to get. Given the DVD and TV, what would be a worthwhile choice?

****EDIT****

I guess I should have mentioned a price range I want to work with. Let's say $1.5k for speakers.

$1.5k for speakers / receiver / subwoofer?

If the room is very large (as it seems it is), I would recommend getting a significant subwoofer to try to fill the space.

If it's a $1.5k budget, the Onkyo 605 would be my first suggestion for a full featured receiver that would fit well into that overall budget to create a balanced system. ($400)

Do you know if any of the places you have demo-ed in have the option to give you a trial period in your home to test out a pair or two of speaker to see if you like them once you get them in your own room (which will be a big difference)?

If you want to have an extended trial period (which is a very good idea), you might consider trying a couple pairs of bookshelf speakers from online companies with good trial policies in your own home.

The X-series from AV123 is on sale now and includes return shipping if you decide you do not want to keep them.

A 5.0 set of X-series with towers up front and a 605 receiver would mean you'd still have enough for a decent sub.

If it's $1500 for just speakers, I'd be partial to the rocket deals going on now and I would recommend at least taking a look at them as an option.

I did ask about demoing the units at home, but they didn't like that idea. Liability issues....blah blah....

Checking out the AV stuff right now. I dig the rosewood. It would go really well with the floors! Gotta take those sort of things into consideration!

So it's $1500 for just the speakers?

I do like Rocket Rosewood :)

There are a lot of other great looking speakers out there too though.

The X-series is also available in some nice veneers based on Palisander.

Well, I am HOPING that I can devote that much to just speakers. That's where I want most of the cash to go since I'll keep them the longest.
If not, I'll have to try to think something else.

Lets say that I can use 1k max on speakers. That effectively takes most (not all) of the AV12 stuff out. I checked the X series 5.0 setup that came out to $937

For 500 ish you can step up to the Onkyo 705 if you shop around, I have seen it on ebay for 500 ish and also ubid. The 605 for 400 is also a good choice. I have the 505 myself.

What system were you looking at?

There are also some 5.1 X-series and Denon deals from AV123 now too (+ shipping) http://www.av123forum.com/showthread.php?t=24756

Before committing to something like this though, I would highly recommend just checking out a single pair of bookshelf speakers to see if they're what you want.

I'd second this. I have the Onkyo 605, and it's a great receiver for the money. A couple HDMI inputs and HDMI output will cover you for high-def for a while. As far as speakers are concerned, the deals at AV123 are smoking right now. The X-MTMs are tall but skinnyish, while the Rocket 450s are shorter and stockier. If your wife is concerned about size, she probably wouldn't be happy with anything larger than those. If you get the rockets, the Bigfoot center channel is quite large, so that's something to consider.

Ok, the budget is now set in stone as $1500 for the entire system. Speakers and all.

Since the DVD player has already been purchased that'll leave a little more for something else.

Also, the wife shot down the rosewood! :Q

I thought she would like those. Wrong again. Crap!

The satin black speakers are going to be the color choice.

AV123 makes some very good speakers for the dollar. Some of them are, conveniently, in black.

The X-series is currently on clearance; you can get a full set of speakers for about $700 or so, leaving plenty of cash for a beefy subwoofer.

The Parts Express Dayton 12" powered sub is the best cheap sub on the market. For a bit more money, you can get a Hsu or Velodyne.

Ya, I was looking at the x-series. How are the AV123 subs? Not as beefy as the others you mentioned?

I could'nt even find any subs on AV123s page, The Dayton is quite cheap (about $150 IIRC), and Velodyne and Hsu are known for making some of the best home-theater subwoofers around. The Hsu VTF-3 is good down to 20hz...although I doubt you'll be wanting to even pay for the $400 VTF-1.

Actually it would be within the budget.

633 for the following:

x-cs Center/Main/Surround Loudspeaker - 129

x-ls Bookshelf Loudspeaker (pair) - 165

x-mtm Tower Loudspeaker (pair) - 339

That leaves a fair bit of room for a sub and receiever OR a better line of speakers.

Don't neglect shipping costs, which will run you 200-250 for all those speakers.

As far as subwoofers go, read this thread. Actually, that's intimidating, so start by reading the eighth post down; it's the first post by Craigsub. Basically, he reviews a whole lot of subwoofers, from the relatively cheap X-Sub (from AV123) to models costing $3,000+. His rankings are a great place to start to familiarize yourself with some of the more reputable companies when it comes to subwoofers, and will certainly help you anticipate the value you can get with your money. For your budget, AV123 (which Craigsub calls Rocket, after their Rocket line), HSU or Elemental Designs would probably be your best bet (again, shipping costs are a concern in price, but some places like ED include these in the price of their equipment).

I have a pair of RB-61s, an RC-52 and four RS-42s in my setup. They sound really great with my Onkyo 804. I had listened to several brands and models. I finally bought the set of RB-61s, knowing the store had a good return policy, and tried them out in my home environment. I still liked their sound, so I bought the rest of the speakers. I use them for movies as well as SACD and DVD-A.

Subs are here on their page, but they have several new ones coming out soon that should offer better bang for the buck vs. the current offerings.

Hmm. They'll be out next year. $599 for the Satin black.

I have already ordered the MTM towers, center and surrounds.

I'm still shopping for the sub and receiver. Trying to decide.
So far the Onkyo 605 seems to be the one everyone raves about. Are there equal choices with the same value or is that about as good as it will get?

Also, would there be any reason to get an external amplifier or will the receiver (assuming I spring for the 605) be sufficient for power?

The 605 will be plenty for the x-series speakers unless you really plan to blast them at super high volumes in a large room.

Thanks for the help everyone!!!

I went with the AV123 X-series (x-mtm towers, x-cs, x-ls) and a HSU VTF-2 Mk3 sub.
Going with an Onkyo 605 receiver to complete it. Already have the Toshiba HD-dvd player and Sony SXRD HD projection (55" of glorious HD).

I think this will be a nice setup! Not the best but WAYYY better than any HTIB setup wuld get me!
