I vote NCIX no question. It will look quite a bit better on your resume. I'd much rather hire someone with 2 years experience at NCIX than 2 years at Futureshop. The commute is too bad but it is a sacrifice to help build your career IMO. 50 Minutes isn't that bad anyway, especially since you aren't driving a car and can watch movies/listen to music on the way.

Because? I'm not talking about a corporate level job here.

Companies don't like it.
If I found one of my workers posting on a forum (especially salary data) they would be out the door.

If you think about it, they may be paying current workers less than they are offering you. You never know.

Hmm true didn't really think about that aspect of it. Still given the rather low stature of the job I don't think it's a big risk. Too late now anyway. :p

slightly higher salary divided over 2 hours of commute= failboat.
it will ruin your potential to use off time to gain additional training/schooling to get a better job. its a bad bad deal
you only commute two hours if you have a good job with high potential for career progression. else there is zero point.

Thats bs, you are talking retail level here, its well known people let this information out. We aren't talking professional salary level where it matters.
Just don't be an idiot and shout about it at work and you'll be fine.

Have they set an expectation of how many days/hours you'll work?

On a 40:40 comparison, NCIX seems better, even including the commute. What if you only get 30 hours at futureshop?

Also - it seems like you might have a networking opportunity at NCIX. If you get regular customers, you might get the opportunity to work for one of them.

if you have a little savings, then id try NCIX, as others have said that it would look much better than futureshop on the resume. if you really bust your ass during your probation period you may be noticed. if youre hurting for cash though, then futureshop for now, no question.

I agree, I think there's more potential career upside with NCIX too. I love how only the local guys are voting for that option :D.

For the record, a few years back I did an hour commute each way by public transit while I worked full time and went to school a couple nights a week. I got to catch up on reading and sleep...and still get in workouts a few days a week.

It was a busy 18 months, but it totally paid off in the long term.

what exactly is it you want to do with your career? IT sales? retail management? something else?

the futureshop job only carries career stepping stone value if your plan is to get into retail management. then again, you were already doing that at 7-11 so if that's the plan, why not go back to 7-11 and start working out how you can open up your own or take over a franchise.

i see the ncix job being more of a stepping stone into IT sales. the way you describe it, the target customer is small businesses. If that is true, then it's a much better spin on the resume for the next level sales job than being the floor guy at futureshop. You get the opportunity to network and potentially build a local small business contact list to take with you to the next level.

if you want something else, take the futureshop job. it gives you more flexibility to dedicate to classes or whatever the next step in that something else is.

deep down inside you know you really want that fryer job at mcd's :)

joking aside, I have to agree with pizza on this. It's ridiculous to commute an hour each way for a minimum pay job. including making "$8.80" an hour, even more of that gets taken away automatically due to the busfare and trainfare alone. subtract an extra $2-$4 dollars a day everyday you work. it adds up. save yourself the trouble and the money by taking the futureshop job, bust ass and become a good salesman in order to stay on after 3 months. either that or if you have the means to do so, move closer to NCIX after you pass the 3 month probation and are comfortable in knowing you have a steady job with them.

Career wise I want to go back to school and finish my degree at some point. But till then I would like a job that is both interesting and combines my sales experience from 7-11 which I actually enjoyed with my interests in computers. NCIX is perfect for this except for the commute. I worry that the futureshop job will end up being rather boring and depressing. I know this particular store fairly well and it has something of a depressing atmosphere. I'm still looking at the 3rd job opportunity I mentioned above and I'm going to press for it today.

NCIX is the much more interesting job, that's for sure, because you would be dealing with the likes of cool people like me. That one hour commute is killer though, you'll really start to hate it after not too long I bet.

If you feel you will be ok with the commute, then definitely go for that one, otherwise Futureshop is the choice.

Update 2: So I've taken the NCIX position. Not worried too much about the commute. Nervous as hell about the position I should know plenty about hardware for the position but I'm good at talking myself into thinking I'm going to bomb. At any rate at worst I'll learn on the job. But I'm also excited about finially working again.

Now you have an excuse to buy a cool toy. Bet you'd like a new netbook, or Ebook reader for the ride :^)

The first one is better. You'll end up with more money in the end and the most valuable, more personal time. I have done 1 hour commutes, they get old.

Agree. I currently work an hour from home, and have less personal time than I ever have before. It's garbage, and when I find the next job to take, I'm out of this one. It sucks.

I know you already took the NCIX job and that's great, at least having a job is going to help get you back in the swing of things, and you can always keep looking for new employment when you aren't working.

Grats on having the ability to pick 1 of 2 jobs :D

Dude, don't worry about it, you'll be more than fine. I have purchased thousands of dollars worth of hardware and software from them and nobody has blown me away with their knowledge (and I know very little). Just be confident with what you know and be open to learning and you will do very well. :)

 Congrats bud. It may not be the ideal commute, but you'll have fun, you'll learn lots and I'm sure it will feel good to be working again.

When fun is work, then work becomes fun. Why be bogged down with a boring job? If NCIX is gonna make you happy in the long run + deal with cool tech stuff and what not. Then go for it !

Also...try figure out a way to make your commute more pleasant

I've already had about $4000 set aside for a new killer rig that I was going to purchase from... actually from NCIX lol. I'll wait till I know that I want to stay before purchasing it and until I get a few paychecks in the bank. And now I'll have an employee discount too. :awe:
