a LOT :)

i prefer my answers in quantitative amounts not qualititative!

Fine then.

IBM Thinkpad T42, $1.8k

My setup that I have compiled, $1.3k, and, believe it or not, it surpasses that Thinkpad by having a 9700 in it, and 512 mb ram, not to mention also having the Pentium M 1.7 GHz cpu w/ 2 mb L2 cache.

My setup that I have compiled, $13k, and, believe it or not, it surpasses that Thinkpad by having a 9700 in it, and 512 mb ram, not to mention also having the Pentium M 1.7 GHz cpu w/ 2 mb L2 cache.

You're paying to much for your laptops

is this thread in the wrong forum or something? The OP was for a list of reasons to own a laptop, not to criticize my unrealistic endeavors.........

The reason I would never build my own laptop is because I'm insanely rough on them. It's the one thing that extended protection plan is a good buy for.

Wow... what's with all you angry people out there? Sure he's not attaching his own lcd monitor to a special chassis and a specialized keyboard. Hey, when I build a SFF Shuttle Case, it's almost the same has him building his laptop. You buy the cpu, ram, hdd, optical drive and stick it all in. Close enough right?

Now anyways, the best argument i can think of is for you to first find a site listing the laptop that you want and the specifications and price. Show them the customized laptop with either more ram, faster processor, etc... and cheaper price. It should be enough.

hrmm, did all that, complete with printing out a lot of pages on said topic.

Thank you for the helpful reply, TuxDave.

If you already have a decent desktop then I really don't see a point in getting a laptop. I only got a laptop so I could go on anandtech while in class......... Also I don't see the point in that asus barebones just get a built laptop from dell or ibm.

seriously, I was able to get a compaq
Athlon 64 3000+ 1.80GHz, 15.4" WSXGA+ Widescreen, 256MB, 60GB HD, DVD/CDRW, 64MB GeForce 440 w/ 1394 & 5-in-1, modem/NIC, 802.11b/g wireless, IEEE 1394, 3 USB 2.0 ports, Built in 5-in-1 reader, 12 cell battery

for $1100 shipped. They offer models with better vid cards for not much more, and 256 more megs of ram isn't that expensive to install yourself (you even get to open your laptop up ;))

i agree with your parents, building a laptop is retarded

and what do you know about builing a laptop?

that it's retarded

yup, what he said. The options for components in building a desktop are so numerous that building one yourself does yield significant benefits in terms of customization and cost. However for a laptop, there are hardly any options on what to put in, and whatever you build can easily be bought in that same exact configuration without really saving that much money.

I just got a 600m for $960 dollars:

Pentium M 725 1.6GHZ
+SXGA resolution
30gig HD (upgradable)
256MB (cheap upgrade)
the usual stuff
I guess the only thing is the video card. I think buying a laptop is better than building one.

When you can get a Dell for 25% off with ~$200 in rebates I don't see the point in building your own laptop. 3 year NBD service plan is worth a grand if you ask me...

Are you sure about that 1.3k price? I took the time to look at your links and quickly looked at the prices, $1.3k seems to be the base unit + cpu + memory. You'd still need to add HD + optical drive + OS. That's another 350+ depending on what kind of stuff you're adding. That brings your price closer to 1.7k not a big difference in price. Certainly not worth the questionable build quality you'd end up with by assembling yourself.

take the above link, configure to your liking, then accept the 5% off promotion on the site... it comes down to about 1400.

Generally warranty applies to damage that's their fault. FPP plans also apply to damage that's YOUR fault, which for a laptop is almost always.
