Trying to convince parents to let me build a laptop

Hi

I really want to build a laptop, using the ASUS m6nbe barebone, and using that guide at legit review, and my parents are not quite buying into the idea of letting me spend money to build it.

What is a good list of reasons to get a laptop? BTW, I'm 17, so this could be useful for college, etc...

Let me know, thanks :)

The problem here isn't really permission, but finances, right? Your parents are refusing to buy you a laptop, not refusing to let you have one (should you buy it yourself).

Well, I hvae the money, but since they spent money on my sister's comp, my mom wants to go 1/2 w/ me, but the big problem is convincing my dad.

If you need us to come up with resons why you should get a laptop, didn't you answer your own question?

HINT: you don't need one.

and what do you know about builing a laptop?

At least as much as you do mister, "My parent's won't buy me a laptop so I don't have one and therefore obviously don't build them".

Laptops tend to have accidents, especially at college. Desktops are fine, but a laptop without a service plan is money wasted.

If it's your money then just order the stuff anyway, you're almost an adult. If you're trying to get your parents to spend the money.... then you've got 1 year before college to save up your own money to buy it.

Yes; I think it's a worthwhile endeavor. ;) First off, attempting to build you own laptop will teach you about posting in the right forum.

It will also teach you that though a NOBLE endeavor, it's an exercise in futility. AFAIK, nobody has successfully built their own laptop that was actually a "working real time laptop."

ps
Wiping the HD of a Dell laptop and putting your own customized version of Linux/Windows on there does NOT count as "building your own laptop."

this is not BUILDING a laptop, as you would build a desktop from scratch (which I HAVE done many many times). It's merely buying the barebone laptop itself, then placing a CPU, hard drive, RAM, and optical drive, and install windows.

By the looks of your replies, it does not look like you ahve read taht legitreviews link I posted.

Bah. Buying a "barebones laptop" i.e. its' already built and you just add an OS IS NOT "building your own laptop." I can't do it. So, it's not like I'm belittling you or anything; not like that at all.

Laptops are all proprietary, unfortunately. You've got the motherboard and the drives, whidh have to fit underneath (and get cooled) the keyboard, which has many space constraints b/c of the case and the ports. Etc, etc. etc. Not an easy task.
