Trying to connect an HP Laserjet 4 via jetdirect

Ok, i've got this laserjet 4 that i've had hooked up to another computer but that one isnt going to be a very good print server anymore, so i'm trying to hook it up to the jetdirect port on the back.

We dont use DHCP here so I set up the printer with an IP address, subnet mask, and gateway but when I try and find the printer on the network using the HP Install network printer wizard program, it doesnt find it. Either by searching the network or by typing in the IP manually.

However when I ping the IP, i get a response back, so it's there.

Anyone know what might be the problem?

could be an ip conflict. are you 100% SURE that the static ip you put on the printer isnt being used?

try another ip on the printer and see if you have the same affect. you could also try turning the printer off and pinging that ip address again.

That was my first thought too; just because you set an IP for the printer doesn't mean there isn't something else out there also set to the same IP, and it's that device that you're actually getting a response from. 🙂 Easy to test though by unplugging the printer running the PING again.

Yeah, i unplugged the network cable and pingged it again and got nothing, so i'm pretty sure it's not an IP conflict, but i'll switch it anyway.

And nweaver, i'm not sure what you meant by what you typed.

i think hes sayin try the web interface on the jetdirect card, you could also try to telnet to the jetdirect card.

if you still get nothing, do you have an extra jetdirect card to eliminate that as the problem? Are you sure its compatible with the model you are using? Do you have any external usb print servers to eliminate the EIO slot?

To be perfectly honest i've never even used these jetdirect interfaces so I know nothing about them. How do you get to the web interface?

just open your favorite web browser and try to navigate to the static ip you assigned

or to telnet, go to a command promt and do telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

doing an ipconfig /all on your local pc yields the same subnet mask and gateway? though that wouldnt explain why you can telnet and not web into the jetdirect.

have you tried creating a local tcp/ip port to the printer?

is this an internal (EIO) jetdirect card, or a standalone jet direct print server?

Install the printer this way...(hitting the major choices)

Add new printer

Local port

New port

Standard TCP/IP port

LJ4 driver

live and learn 🙂 try to stay away from 3rd party apps that do the same things that windows does, usually ends up in headaches.
