Trying to build first comp.

I am going to build my first pc but have a few questions. Is it possible to build a good gaming computer for $1000 or less, not including the monitor. I have been reading on the net and what I have thought about getting is a ASUS CULS2 with PIII 700 proc. I do want 128 meg memory and atleast a HD that supports 66. I don't think I will need more than 15 gig since I only have about 5gig filled on my current pc. My wife is getting the current pc to replace hers so no parts will come from it. The above motherboard, processor, memory and HD are things I do want but would like suggestions on this.
I haven't decided on a video card yet. A V5 is nice but doesn't the 32meg DDr GeForce II support 4x AGP better? Or is the original GeForce a good card? Thanks for any help or links to good sites to buy from. 🙂

If you're careful, you can build a decent budget rig for under $1K.

I'm sure some of the people here would be wiling to help you with specs. I don't have time right now to go check prices (I'm at work... 🙁), but I will make one recommendation. Wait for the GeForce 2 MX to come out before you get a video card. Looks like it's going to kick ass for the price, essentially the performance of a GeForce DDR for like half the price.

Go to http://www.unrealpc.com/ and click on systems. If you can't find something you would like there, then I would suggest going to pricewatch.com and checking prices for each component that you want..

I'll give you a few of my own suggestions:

CPU: (Budget, good performance) Duron 600 (or higher if you can get your hands on it)
RAM: 128MB PC100 (or 64MB PC133, just depends)
Hard drive: 15GB Quantum LM or 30GB Quantum LM if you want more room

Get an Asus motherboard. It will support ATA66/100 most definitely. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

i say a socket A board with a Duron 600 chip. and a budget 128MB pc133. you may also be able to get a 20gig maxtor drive within your budget.
i would wait a week or so for the new ABIT socket A motherboard.
