I'm wanting to get in shape, I searched on here for "workout" and "exercise" and only saw stuff about "americans are fat!"

I own a "Slam Man" (boxing machine) this tires me out, boxing is a decent full body workout, no? If I do the foot work along with the punching, I really feel it in my arms, sides & legs.

& a Fitness Flyer, it's like a cross country skier maching. Not the best quality, and it's missing a few screws I think, but I've been on it for 45 minutes and squeaks and shaking aside it seems to hold up to my 210 lb frame fine.

I have some hand weights with plates (38# total)

I don't really want to buy anything else, and I can't really afford those expensive protein bars/powders. But if there's a suggestion for a few smaller things I should buy I'm cool with that.

I'm NOT trying to trim up really, I'd like to tone up and put on some muscle, and beef up my arms. Maybe get me some abs if possible.

I googled around for information but most what looked useful was just "buy this book!" I have no problem buying a book, but I'd like to know what's good first.

I know there are some hardcore fitness people on here. Any care to give up some suggestions on a nice routine for me, that won't have me dropping pounds off? I want to bulk up, but not too much, like I said mostly my arms & abs, oh and legs too.

thanks.

the only thing that will build muscle is weight lifting. you won't be able to do much with only 38 lbs.

Swim 2 miles a day and tell me if you haven't built any muscle in 6 months.

I can buy a weight bench, but I'm sure there are other ways to build muscle, like I said I don't want bodybuilder arms, just bigger. Squats will help my leg muscles, crunches for the abs. Arms, you might be right about the weights. But I hope boxing can give me some results at least.

You will build some but you have your limits with swimming and goes for mainly aerobic work outs. Once you are more thena beginner it is harder to adjust to. Unless you want to swim with weights tied to your body...

Get some weights to help out and do some bodyweight stuff at home : chins, push ups, squats, sit ups, leg raisers when your on the floor:

Weights: squats, bench press, wide grip pull ups, weighted chins, military press, curls, dips, bent forward rows, incline sit ups, bulk offs.

www.geekfitness.com and you will get a more indepth reply and there are plenty of stuff on there already.

In the end most people will need weights or work on some intense bodyweight stuff.

You won't be like a bodybuilder as you won't be eating enough and on other 'non legal' supplements.

You can get pretty big arms doing chins and when they are too easy (like when you can reach 15 without stopping) then wear a back pack and add weights in it.

Squats with 38lbs is going to not much and also even if you do loads of endurance they won't get that big either. Just not enough of a load for them.

I would probably drown considering that I'd be 360 miles from shore.
