Trying to Break a Computer :UPDATE:

If i broke my computer and told my mom I needed a new one, she'd point and laugh at me. OP, send newegg some money orders.

I kind of know where you're coming from here, since I was stuck with a Duron 950, ATI RAGE 128, 256 megs of SDRAM for years. I eventually saved up enough to upgrade the video card to something to make games actually playable (Radeon 9550), but that didn't actually help much. Finally, the motherboard died a long slow death of bad cap syndrome (and there was much rejoicing). Anyway, if you still REALLY want to break your computer (instead of upgrading it behind your parent's' back which is actually a pretty good idea), then all you need to do is to install Folding@home and leave it running 24/7. If it's like most crappy OEM computers, it should perish due to the heat within 2 or 3 months. This also has the advantage of leaving no obvious signs of sabotage.

I don't think it's ever been established that this is "his" computer, so no form of sabotaging it can really be considered acceptable behavior.

Showing you're mature enough to handle situations like this properly is one of the things that makes parents proud of you and more likely to think you deserve something like a new computer.

Errr.....so the OP wants to do the immoral act.....in lieu of getting a real job, becuase he wants to do the moral "volunteer" job?

Ya know, you could make a pretty penny robbing the hospital of some expensive drugs......just a thought.....you can also sell the comp for 1oo or 200 and then add in another 300 to get an alright PC....add better parts as you get more cash....

One thing I don't get is the kids here who mentioned saving up $2000+ to make a gaming PC for years! Sure, I loved gaming in HS too....but c'mon!!!!! Especially the guy who got....a Mac of all things(no gaming)....WTH were you kids thinking!

Is it really worth all those hours slaving away as a cart boy or cashier just to Play CS and Oblivion in super high resolutions??!?! Around $1000 & under I can understand...but 2k is way too much for a kid to throw down on a computer.....for Gaming of all things....

Granted, there is much worse one could blow 2 grand on....ricing a car out....🙁

There are two reasons why they're saving up for crap like that.
1. They're stupid enough to spend all of their money at once, instead of maximizing useful value by getting midrange parts and then upgrading the parts that need upgrading the most (usually ram or video card)
2. They don't know how 'pinch pennies', like not buying a computer case--->going to a computer junk yard/goodwill and picking up parts you can use in your rig instead, like a free optical drive, FDD drive, case, ethernet or what ever.
3. They're kids, when they get a large sum of money, they waste it. Plain and simple.

You know, I never even noticed that. I knew you could pay with Paypal on newegg, but I was wondering if he'd be able to open a Paypal account. Didn't even register that he already had a PayPal account. That just makes it seem even dumber.

It's your birthday in a couple of months... He won't let you buy a computer with your money...

You're getting a computer for your birthday.

hmm, sounds like his dad wants him to save up for something more important than a computer.

Granted, computers are great and fun, but it's not the end of the world if you don't have a decent one. Perhaps he wants you to save your money up and spend it on something actually useful (maybe a car or something) a few years down the road instead of spending it on a computer that will be outdated in a few years. Sounds like a responsible father to me. You really have to have a high disposable income if you want to keep up with the ever changing PC components, and you'd be like sucked into that wanting to upgrade constantly, thus you never have much money for anything else until you get a "real" job. Instead of wanting to waste $1000+ get your self a game console (if you don't already have one) and get yourself some decent games. At least that way, you're not sucked into constantly buying upgrades, and then save the rest up. Trust me, you'll thank your father later down the road when you have a few thousand saved up, and you can buy a car with YOUR own money, or be able to start living on your own, pay for a few semesters of college, etc. Four years down the road, you'll realize that you wasted your money for a few hours of enjoyment. Is paying $1000+ really worth that? Well that's up to you to decide.

I'm actually siding with your father, I kinda wished my dad did that for me, as I wasted a lot of money on things I regret purchasing when I was younger.

You have to be fscking kidding me. Newegg takes money orders? No way in hell.

That kinda pisses me off... I would've saved myself a lot of money, time, and hassle if I had known that. 🙁

Dude, if its your want to play bf2 well its your responsbility not his. You pay for it not him. Your dad's job is to feed you, clothe you, give you a house to stay in, and keep you in school.

I mean, im 13 and im sick of my using my 2ghz p4 integrated graphics gateway notebook to game.
Ive been saving for 4 months, $600 so far. Birthday is in a couple of months, and im set.

I'm 14, and I'm sick of using my 2.8GHz Opty 144 and 7800GT. I've been saving up for 2 months, $300 so far. By the time vista rolls around I'll have about $1300, enough to ditch all this crashy windows crap and switch to mac.

Please tell me you're kidding.

No I am not kidding. I'm really looking forward to OS X Lepoard, by the time that comes out, I should have enough to buy quite a nice mac for myself. Thanks to Cider I'll also be able to play my games without having to switch back to windows.

What are you talking about? The Opteron 144 and 7800GT are amazing, I've owned macs since the mid 80's believe me, I know which one I prefer, and it's the pc. Probobly because of these forums, but idk.

But I saved 13 kids from a fire and adopted another from cambodia! What have you done?

I didn't read all the posts in your thread but I did see that you prefer not to break the one you have, but would rather have a virus or something to emulate a dead PC. This suggests that you prefer to have a new computer and keep the old one as well. Maybe I'm missing something but this seems like a low blow to your dad who works for a living. What if he throws up his hands and says you have to live with the "dead" one?

The first rule when digging a hole is to stop when you become aware that you are in one.
