Trying to book a flight to Europe on Lufthansa

I'm trying to book a flight to Europe and really want to fly Lufthansa. Now, all the flights I can find on Europe will only use them for one way (meaning I can get Chicago->Frankfurt one way, but either NWA or United the other way). Is there a particular reason for this? Dumb luck? Note that I am using primarily Orbitz as they tend to have the best prices at the moment.

Details:
ATW to AMS from ~Jan 4th through Jan 25th.

Yup, and you can't use my airport as the origin point (It is pretty much only United that flies out of this airport).

Me. The only other option would be to leave my car in Milwaukee or Chicago for three weeks, which isn't exactly reasonable.

I had no problem finding ORD-AMS AMS-ORD on the dates you needed. Price was around 1400. All flights were 100% Lufthansa.

You are just going to have to book your ATW-ORD ORD-ATW tickets individually. You better allow plenty of time for connection.

Click expand search options on Orbitz, and list Lufthansa as your primary airline.

Ouch, yeah. I should have noted that I am not wanting to spend a grand. With Orbitz I can get it now with the one leg for ~650.

The fares on your outbound date seem very high on LH - this could be because it would be a peak time for any Germans returning to Germany from the US following New Year. Its probably very low season for Americans (who tend to fly the US airlines) to travel to Europe.

The best you can do is UAL on the way out and LH on the way back. (no idea why you want to fly LH anyway - their economy seats are amongst the worst out there - I'd fly UAL over them any time if I had to sit in the back of the bus.)

Just book the cheaper flight. Lufthansa and United are both Star Alliance, so I don't understand the need for Lufthansa.

Really, I have heard that they are both about the same...also that Lufthansa has wireless available on the flight (at something like $20/flight).

Is that why you are wanting to fly them? The wireless? Personally, it wouldn't be worth the extra hassle and/or higher ticketing cost. The flight is not horrible in length, but pretty long. A couple of books, a magazine, a few beers, and you should sleep. Is it not a nighttime flight?

Pretty much everything I can find is a nighttime flight (leaving Chicago at about 4-5pm). I do NOT want to sleep on the plane though (sleep on a flight is extremely resless for me and painful for my neighbors as I tend to jerk every time I wake up). But...oh well. Anyway, I would want to have *something* to do. While I do have about six hours on my laptop batteries, it would be nice to have something I could actually do during that time.

Yeah, I can understand that. A couple of other possabilities...

1. Get sleeping meds from your doctor.
2. 2 DVDs on laptop+inflight entertainment/movie. You could also DL a bunch of TV Shows -- don't watch TV for a week or two before you leave.
3 I assume you are going on vacation, but sometimes working on a school project or work project is great. You get ahead, and you actually spend the cramped time accomplishing something.
4. Get blitzed on alcohol. Gonna make your jet lag really bad, though.

You should see if any the of the planes you will be on have power ports. You can buy a special plug for your Laptop and use it the whole time.

Personally, if the wireless was available I might use it (hell 20 bucks is hotel wireless cost in some area), but I wouldn't book my flight based on it. If you can pull one leg with the wireless and the other leg on NWA or United then do it.

Thanks for the advice. It is mostly for vacation, though I may do enough while I am there to get a few independant study credits (which would give me something to do on the way back).

How would I find out if the plane has power ports? Just call up United?

Call them, but your luck would be mixed. Best way is to go to FlyerTalk.com Forums and make a post in their United Forum.

aye, and they (+ SAS) code share so there's a pretty good chance that even if you flew Lufthansa you would end up on a United plane.

Never figured out Lufthansa and SAS being partners, they are major competitors in Europe.

ok, one last question. When looking at United, it says that it is a coach fare. How would I know if I am getting Economy or Economy Plus?

Unless you are Premeir or above, or are paying a "higher" class fare then it probably won't be Economy Plus. You could always ask for it when you check in.
