i take linux pretty seriously 'in the desktop market'....i cant stand using windows for a desktop.

Actually, theres a (extremely beta) version of apt for Mandrake. Link

Cant say how well it works, as all of my packages are up to date. But it does install and seems to check the ftp sites.

Alpha-ware that's almost a year old is basically orphan-ware. I thought Mandrake developed something called urpmi or something.

Also, I use .deb and apt-get only as an example of more powerful package management.

As simple as apt-get is, it's also a geek solution to the problem. Note that despite my criticisms, I still personally much prefer Linux package management to Winblows OS + updates. While Winblows Update is a simpler, cleaner interface, it's also far from ideal.
