The problem with the patch, gum, etc. is that they are just alternative nicotine delivery systems. They may help you break the mechanical habit of inhaling tobacco smoke, but they do nothing to break the physical addition to nicotine, itself.

I won't go into my usual long anti-tobacco rant unless someone provokes that. I'll just wish you good luck. I'm tired of watching good friends die from this sh8.

Don't take the Zyban. Don't let yourself be clouded by anti-depresents. You don't need an anti-depresents to quit. You are chemically addicted to nicotine and mentally addicted to the habits. The anti-depresents may help you overcome the chemical addiction, but once you go off of them, the mental addiction will still be there.

This is just all my opinion though. I'm a very light smoker. I go through about a pack a week at most.

You don't need anything to quit smoking.
Zyban sure helps.
I have tried the gum and patches multiple times.
I used Zyban and quit.

Ryan, I want to say this in the nicest way.
You are a smoker.
You are trying to tell the guy how to quit smoking.
...but, you're a smoker.
You say, "Don't let yourself be clouded by anti-depressants."
Captain obvious, who's got cloudy thoughts?

I just quit without aids, but i wasn't really smoking that much. None the less, it sucks hard far a while when your body is screaming at you for a smoke. BUT afterwhile you body stops wailing so loud. Just embrace the pain for a few months and you'll make it.

Oh and i found that if I was craving, it helped to remove whatever cues were triggering that craving.

Harvey, Your dealing with both a physical and a emotional addictive process. Nicotine, by its self is not really harmful. It actually does have some beneficial uses with ADD, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's and has some anti-depressant qualities as well. It's the other stuff in cigarettes that is carcinogenic.
One thing you may want to be cognizant of is a slight increase in suicide rates for the first 30 days after you quit. :Q

I think i need some help doing this, cold turkey, just ain't cuttin it.....i tend to get weak, and sneak one in.
Just curious if the patch works better, or maybe the gum,. With the gum, i figure i could take one when cravings get bad.
These aids are rather expensive, and just wanna make sure beore i buy.
Any ex-smokers out there!!!!!!!!!!!
Help

Thanx,
Richard
Yep. Ex-smoker/drinker here.

Just remove any sort of cigarettes from you and, in one of your stronger moments, convince your friends to not share their's with you...Go a month and you won't look back :)

Cold turkey's what I did...have no experience w/patches or gum...
