You need 64 bit sound card drivers, video drivers, sata drivers, i think even LAN drivers. It's probably pretty good if you have those handy. I couldn't even install it because i don't have 64 bit sata drivers.

this xp 64 beta has been around for quite some time. i remember d/ling it during that amd/tiger direct promo where you got the 64bit chip + mobo + tshirt + farcry for $110.

will my games run on this?

more important, will WoW run on it?

most apps should run fine on it, windows will have to run in, cooincedentally WoW mode (Windows on Windows) it had to run like this for 16 bit apps when 32 apps and processors first came out.

So it will run probably exactly the same as it does now, maybe with slightly more overhead, until 64 bit version and patches for these games come out, then it will run much much better on the same hardware

Not to speak for Gothgar, but believe he understood the application spoken of; hence, the inclusion of the word "cooincedentally". [sic]

For those interested in the HCL (Hardware Compatibility List), look here. Being that x64 is still a beta version however, the list is quite limited.

I wonder how this would work for me... I just ordered a new AMD 3500 939 CPU and Abit Mobo. I intend to use the new system primarily for gaming and keep my old P4-2.4 for work purposes. Could I download the xp 64 OS and then use it for gaming? I play primarily half-life2/counterstrike.

Thanks OP for the post.

it wont unless you have a nvidia card currently ati is lacking drivers worth your time.
also you would need to check if your sound card has 64 bit drivers....but it probably wont.

this version is no where near where it needs to be to replace xp, its merely a toy for now.

360 days from download? Or 360 days from install?

I'm guessing from install since you can easily manipulate a download timestamp.

most user format after 6 months

Dont bother if you have a Broadcom wireless nic and want to use it. No 64 bit drivers for it yet.

*** Note ***

For those thinking that this will improve gaming performance.

I remember seeing that gaming fps actually falls with the beta windows 64 bit os.

Its in a review here somewhere.

I wonder when MS will officially release a 64-bit version of WinXP? Probably won't do it until Intel releases their 64-bit Pentium 4 (Pentium 5?) to compete with the Athlon 64.

Exactly.

Uhm.. no deal here. This has been offered by MS for the last year. Since Feb/ March last year. BTW, it is a POS. Don't bother downloading. A good chunk of it is still broken (in beta) and no one.. let me reiterate... NO ONE makes 64 bit drivers that work on windows xp 64 bit. Which means...

You won't likely see any improvement over your current version on windows.

MS is moving about as fast on win 64 as intel is on their 64 bit processors. Which is to say, almost not at all. Wait for the final release cause beta testing this POS will just frustrate you and cause you to uninstall the d@mned thing after a few days.

Downloaded it, installed it, uninstalled it. Not nearly enough driver support for me. I'll wait for the REAL version to come out.

LOL. I can almost *feel* your disgust 🙂

to be disgusted is one thing... but to take the time to spell it out (in a public forum such as this) and show blasphemy shows a lack of maturity and common sense. I probably shouldn't even of taken the time to respond to your insulance... but I did

Has anybody had any luck getting this? I signed up for it on the 6th but am still waiting for the email with the link to the download.

RC1 is supposed to come out to the public beta section in a couple of weeks. It's already available to MSDN subscribers.

WOW, you must have ALOT of time on your hands testing EVERY driver out there with windows XP 64Bit
Nvidia 64BIT Windows XP 64 edition drivers

It is typically very easy to convert a driver to 64-bits. It is almost entirely a matter of the right mindset. And a matter of having a system to verify the changes on.

But once a few vendors support x64 then their competitors will quickly follow suit at the risk of losing market share. It's coming kids, it's probably just on the back of Intel and not AMD though as we once thought.

I am anxious to see if Windows x64 will be faster or slower that Windows XP (32bit) for typical apps on my soon arriving system.
