Ok, so I've been an nvidia guy since Riva / TNT cards. I've never owned an ATI card. I'm making the final changes for my next build and I'd like to hear from the ATI guys on what I'm missing out on.
Try to sway me to ATI...

So far I've owned 3 cards from ATi, Mach32, Mach64, which were very good cards at their times, and 9800XT very briefly, so can't really say much about it.
Uhhh if you go Ati you can get atitool which is a pretty neat app. And also, uh, Ruby makes a much better mascot than Fat Mike. What else... hey maybe red goes with your system better than green?
There have been some reports of problems with the recent Nvidia cards, such as shimmering and shadowing problems in certain games such as FarCry. I think the shimmering has been fixed now, though.
For me, I like gaming, but I do like to watch movies (yeah, real ones, I don't watch pr0n all the time).
So, for me Avivo was a dissapointment as well as Purevideo in some ways although they say Purevideo is better with current drivers.
I guess we'll have to wait for the next generation to know if we'll get super looking video. But, for now, the 6600 GT is a good buy (unless you only play games like UT2004 and get the X700 Pro real cheap like I did).

There's not much competitition as far as price/performance goes with a 7800gt, so it may be your best bet. If you're looking for something a little slower and about $130-$150 cheaper, take a look at the x800gto2, which is currently the best deal on an ATI card (after unlocked/overclocked).
Just get a 7800gt. There's nothing in that price range that is nearly as good. The ATI cards are currently either not available or cost too much.
Also, and this is a personal opinion, I'd rather have 20 pipes than 16 or 12, since i've HEARD from a few sources that it's likely that the 7 series will do better in next gen because they have more pipelines.
Also, tests show that the 7800 gt/x get higher minimum framerates than the x1000 series. Well, thats what it looks like anyways...
So i'd just go for the 7800gt.

Performance is so similar that it would be difficult to decide which is better based on that aspect alone.
If you absolutely need the best IQ, be prepared to pay extra for it with the X1800XL.
Otherwise, save cash with the 7800GT and hope that future drivers fix the IQ issues.

Just get whatever's best for the money. The 7800gt cant be beat in that price range in terms of performance, but with all the IQ issues I keep hearing about I wouldnt be buying any Nv card right now.

If you are specifically going in the 7800GT price range, there is no real competitor from ATi, as the x1800XL is much more expensive and marginally slower to boot. If you're going in a lower price range, a x800GTO2 is a really good buy provided you can actually find one.

As for high end: well you have to give ATI the nod. They just KILL with AA and AF enabled. WHile Nvidia arguably maintains min framerates almost as well, when comparing max and avg, ATI simply runs away with the benchmark. So for the high end, it is a tossup with the nod towards ATI for the better IQ and much better AA performance. Reasons to get Nvidia: Killed performance without or with minimal AA and AF, lower powerconsumption, and i guess you could argue SLI.
Purevideo and AVIVO are merely extras, with the nod to purevideo right now until ATI finalizes their drivers.

Another thing to consider is that the X1800XL claims it can do external HDR + AA... Something to consider if that is true and would affect my purchase.
And while the XT may "handle AA better" there is no game that you can play with AA/AF on the XT that the GTX cant do, even if you are getting 5 fps less (Like... aww Im only getting 65 and you're getting 70 dang it... who cares?)
In some cases it's quite a bit more than 5 fps difference at 16x12 with AA/AF.
BF2: 85 vs 69 fps
FarCry: 78 vs 58 fps
FEAR MP Beta: 41 vs 31 fps
Chaos Theory: 51 vs 39 fps
Nvidia can do the same in all titles that are not EXR HDR. ATi cant even do EXR HDR as far as i know.
You mean the same way that an x850 could do HDR as long as it's not the EXR method? With AA too.
