I got 6 on the first try also. I didn't read the text, just treated it like a jumble of letters.

ok, this is impressive so anyone care to scientifically explain why the brain failed to process OF?

its only two letters

You don't even really read it, you see a short word that begins with O and your brain skips it. My take anyway.

> The brain cannot process the word "OF".

It's not that the brain can't process it... it's that, assuming you're fairly used to English, you pronounce "of" "uvv." The easiest way to search for a consonant like F is to read and listen for "fff/ph" sounds in your head.

> Anyone who counts all six F's on the first go is a genius

Ummm... no.

Edit: Now, you want to see a neat trick? Have someone add various integers such that the answer is always six; do it quickly. Tell them they have to answer as fast as they can. E.g. "What's 2 plus 4?" "What's 5 plus 1?" do this 6 times, quickly. Then quickly say "Name a vegetable." 90% of the time, they'll say carrot. Can't imagine why that one works.

Strange... I managed to count 4... which includes one of the F's in an "of". Why didn't my brain count the other "of's" ??!?!?!?!?!? I'm wack!

Weird...

I wonder if it's down to how we read aloud in our heads when concentrating and the sounds the letters make....ie.

Finished, Files etc all have the "eff" sound while of has an "Ov" sound.
