Try out 1440p performance

I'm thinking of getting one of those cheap 27" 1440p monitors that are popular these days, but I'm wondering if there's a way to see how my current system will do switching to a higher resolution.

Is there a way to run my graphics card in a higher resolution but still connect to a 1080p tv via hdmi? I don't mind showing a fraction of the screen, I can still "play" my game and leave the FPS counter on and try out different AA settings, etc. I have an AMD 7850 but don't know what to look for in the setting for a display option like this.

Pretty sure there's no way to set resolution higher than what your monitor shows as max (native) resolution, unless there's some wild trick I don't know about. If you don't have access to any 1440 monitors to test, maybe bump AA up a few notches?? That'll put a bit more of a hit on your system. Best I can remember from benchmarks, a little lower resolution with higher AA is fairly close when comparing to a bit higher resolution with a little lower AA. Been a little while though. Other than trying that, I dunno. Should give you a good ballpark idea, though.

I have a pair of those Korean 1440p IPS panels myself. Initially, I had a Sandy i5 and a Radeon 6950 2GB. 90% of the time, that card was fine. Though I noticed some chugging during several titles, DAO and Witcher 2 to name my top offenders. Moving to a 7950 3GB resolved those problems.
