17 because that's my arbitrary scalar of choice and the pattern 9 3 15 7 12 17 13 5 17 11 is just fine, thank you very much.

Ask a silly question, get a silly answer. Seriously, these "fill in the number in this sequence" questions are almost always far too open ended to be worth asking.

okay, I know it's 8, but 6 may also work.

9-3 = 6
15 - 7 = 8
12 - 6 = 6
13 - 5 = 8
17 - 11 = 6

There is an alternating pattern of 6's and 8's.
