Trunk Springs

I've got a 2001 Accord Coupe.

I just got these new 6x9 subwoofers I want to try, I am tired of a subwoofer box in my trunk. But the depth on the 6x9s is much larger than will fit, the trunk springs are in the way.

What happens if I remove my trunk springs? Normally, when I open my trunk, it pops open a bit. Without the springs, I know it won't pop open, but will it remain open once i open the trunk? I don't want to have to hold my trunk open each time I want to get to something.

How do I remove them? It doesn't look difficult, but then again, I don't have any trunk spring installer tools.

Help! I want to check out these subs!

The springs counterbalance the weight of the trunklid. if you remove them, you would need a prop rod. It may be possible to move them to the center, but you would not only lose trunk space, but it would require metalwork. Good metalwork.

*ding* Winnar!

I had a 2001 Accord LX (4-door) first year for that body style...great car! :) W/O the "springs" (tension bars, actually...well yeah, "springs!") the trunk won't stay open.

What you CAN do is make spacers out of 3/4" MDF. Do this.

Get a 2x4 piece of 3/4" MDF from Home Depot. it will cost you a whole $6. :D

Lay one of the 6x9s face down on it. Trace the outside ring. Now the hard part. You need to trace an "inside of the first ring" the same width as the frame of the speaker. Look at the speaker and you'll see what I mean. You want the ring to be bigger than the diameter of the cone, but still inside of the first ring you drew. Got it?

Cut that ring out with a jigsaw. Check the fit. Make another one. :D

Use the ring b/t the rear deck and the speaker. VoilA! You've gained 3/4" of space~!! Hope this helps.

PS
From a really old, really formerly into it car audio guy that remembers Jensen 6x9 Triaxials and Pyramid equalizers.

i think my only option is to remove the springs and install gas shocks.

i would make spacers but there isnt enough room from the rear deck and the rear window. there's barely enough room there for me to squueze the 6x9 in.
