Trump will dismantle FEMA by 2026; Federal disaster relief will likely be prioritized for friendly governors

From CNN: https://www.cnn.com/2025/06/11/politics/fema-hurricane-season-phase-out-trump

“We want to wean off of FEMA, and we want to bring it down to the state level,” Trump told reporters during a briefing in the Oval Office, later saying, “A governor should be able to handle it, and frankly, if they can’t handle it, the aftermath, then maybe they shouldn’t be governor.”

This next part's the real kicker [emphasis mine]:
Trump added that the federal government will start distributing less federal aid for disaster recovery and that the funding will come directly from the president’s office.
In other words, if you're a Democrat governor who refuses to bend the knee, good luck! This is how they plan to keep Florida red. You can't elect a Democrat if you plan to rebuild after a hurricane, no matter how corrupt your current and previous Republican governors are.

But remember, this is everything that America voted for! I'm sure MAGA nation is happy about this and will gladly pay higher insurance premiums next year all over the Deep South and Tornado Alley.

How is funding going to come directly from the president ? Congress sets the budget and where money goes. FEMA gets money only because Congress legislates it.

The moment the orange turd denies disaster relief to a blue state they will begin withholding federal taxes. I have a feeling California will be the first state to do it. I wouldn’t mind a breakup of the country at this point. The maga are death cult of malice and are irredeemable. Let the red states go bankrupt.

Withholding taxes is hard though because taxes are assessed individually.

I don't understand why so many people keep repeating this. Do people really look at their paycheck, see their federal withholding, and think that money goes to the state who then sends it to the Feds? The company you work for withholds the money from your paycheck and sends it to the IRS.

You realize that would make a totally unhinged MAGA state... your neighbor.
Ask Russia's neighbors how that works for them.
Peace was never an option.

The best I can figure it is that nobody wants to panic, everyone just wants to focus on living their lives. Some of us got a reality check early on when spouses lost jobs as the entire global health and aid apparatus was shut down, but most people aren’t there yet. And besides, you can’t trust 90% of the plans that are announced because last week was always Big Beautiful Tariff Bill Week and next week is always TACO Tuesday all week. So who knows what happens with FEMA. We’re all just frogs slowly boiling at this point.

But right now at this moment it's look over there week (at CA), not that there has not been a real tariff deal done, no Big Beautiful Bill, essentially NOTHING OF NOTE regarding actual governing.
STOP FALLING FOR HIS DISTRACTIONS!

From what I've been reading FEMA is already so compromised that if something major happened even now it would be basically unable to respond, even if Trump wanted it to. Which is a bold choice going into hurricane season

When Hurricane Ike came through in 2008 and did 6 figures worth of damage to our 18 month old house, we got bridge loan from the SBA through FEMA that helped us pay for home repairs until the insurance came through. Then we paid the loan off.

Now as tax paying patriotic Americans we deserved that help from FEMA. I’m pleased to say right now that the bulk of our area is conservative and does not deserve that help the next time a hurricane comes through.

Violating the constitution to illegally remove immigrants following legal immigration procedures is expensive and they need to pay for it. They definitely don’t need handouts from FEMA next time a hurricane comes through. After all it’s what they voted for.
