In this particular case he's also arrogating to himself the sole right to determine whether Mexico has done enough, without actually specifying what exactly it is that he wants them to do. While this allows himself the option to stop at any point and declare victory due to his manly policies regardless of the results, it's also a pretty shit way of actually motivating Mexico to do anything at all. So, in short, we are going to tax American consumers until such time as Mexico takes responsibility for our border security. Actually, let's not call it a tax; let's call it a "freedom surcharge".

Funny how this new tariff annoucement coinsides with his dirty, filthy impeachment problem. Nice new pretty distraction..good job Steve Miller.

Or...Some reports indicate that the decision to threaten Mexico with tariffs seems to have gone over the objections of his own cabinet members. In other words, this could be an example of Trump being rattled by the Mueller investigation fallout, which is why the House needs to continue investigating. Force Trump to react and make more unhinged decisions.

The idea behind this extortion, er...I mean "strategic policy decision" is to make Americans pay more for all the products we buy from Mexico, in order to pressure them into preventing migrants from crossing the border. Don't understand the logic?...Neither do I.

All of this is happening as Trump is pressing congress to approve his NAFTA replacement treaty, which he calls "The most important trade deal we've ever made, by far!"

I'm assuming the real back story to the latest verbal chundering by our cloth-eared git of President is intended as having another go at forcing Democrats to fund the Stupid Fucking Wall (SFW):

"Hey, remember when we tried holding the federal government hostage for the SFW? Okay, so it didn't quite work the way we hoped. Clearly, we weren't thinking big enough. Let's hold the entire economy hostage!"

Meanwhile, who the hell is ever going to negotiate in good faith with the USA again? After more than a year of manufactured drama over supposedly getting a more advantageous (to the US) trade deal with Mexico, under threat of punitive tariffs, the administration effectively says, well thanks, suckers, and now we're implementing tariffs anyway.

Dems need to run with these tariffs like republicans would do, message it as a Trump tax on the middle class and drone on it in unison/lockstep like repubs do on issues. That's the only way the average person "gets it".

If every Dem on cable/national news and every candidate at every town hall and campaign stop did this, the People would get the message. Democrats are terrible at this while republicans are the masters.

So just a couple thoughts.

1. According to the article, there's nothing to celebrate just yet:

A Mexican delegation led by Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard will discuss the dispute with U.S. officials in Washington on Wednesday, and Lopez Obrador said he expected "good results" from the talks, and for a deal to emerge.

"The main thing is to inform about what we're already doing on the migration issue, and if it's necessary to reinforce these measures without violating human rights, we could be prepared to reach that deal," Lopez Obrador said.

What we see here is Mexico not prepared to follow the same path as Trump. It's plausible Mexico also is not sure if the POTUS realizes they have measures in place.

2. This tariff is transparently a bad idea for Americans. Mexico knows it, so it's no sure thing by a long shot to get Mexico to budge on much, if anything at all.

3. This was something I thought outloud about (probably not on here, most likely with the Mrs.) when the tariff war with China started. Mexico is a tighter ally (even though we use them as a verbal punching bag) with MUCH less GDP. I predicted something like this would occur, Mexico would make concessions, and subsequent "See, tariff wars are easy to win" would be coming. Even though they weren't part of our "tariff war" to begin with. We'll see if it plays out like that.
