Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) introduced a new Dream Act in Congress Wednesday, reminding Americans that there is strong bipartisan support for Dreamers—immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children and are seeking citizenship. According to a recent Morning Consult and Politico poll, 78% of American voters support giving Dreamers the chance to stay permanently in America, including 73% of people who voted for President Donald Trump.

Should the program be terminated, however, the losses would be devastating. The same study estimates that ending DACA would reduce the nation’s GDP by $433.4 billion over a decade. Another study by the Immigrant Legal Resource Center states that 685,195 young immigrants would become unemployed immediately, causing employers to incur $3.4 billion in costs associated with the termination and replacement of employees. Without DACA, tax revenue would be seriously impacted. Over the next decade, $24.6 billion in Social Security and Medicare contributions would be lost.

His base, like any base, is a constituency of people that care about different things. The immigrant haters will love this. The people that support him for other reasons might be against it on some theoretical level, but they ultimately won't care that much.

A deeply unpopular man with perverted, nihilistic views will keep shoving this shit down our throats for maybe the next three, but probably the next seven years. He will do it because enough powerful people have something to gain.

Shrug. What can be done by executive order can be undone by executive order. That's a good caution against reliance on executive orders, and therefore overemphasis on the executive branch.

In case you didn't notice, I was responding to a poster who lamented that Trump was reversing lots of what Obama did. If my response wasn't a contribution to the topic, then neither was his.

No, you're wrong. You're so FUCKING wrong. The point of that post was not that Trump was able to reverse things that Obama did. It's that he is reversing things because Obama did them. It's insane to reverse DACA, it benefits nobody, it serves no purpose at all, except pure schadenfreude.

What the poster got wrong is that this is a Trumpist idea. It's not. Nihilistic hatred of Dems/Liberals is a bedrock of American conservatism, and it was on full display as congress voted to repeal the ACA again and again for no reason other than their hatred.
