This is a pretty big fluff piece. Does anyone really believe millions of Americans admire Merkel? I know little of her and besides the geniuses on AT P&N that know EVERYTHING I'd wager most Americans won't know who she is 7 days from now.

There are plenty of stupid intelligent people. It's helpful not to conflate the two. Think of intelligence as potential. In order to develop this potential one needs to put in some effort. It's already quite telling that she was a christian in communist East Germany, demonstrating how stubborn she is. Her father is partially to blame for that, as a Lutheran pastor.

I never stated she was unintelligent. There are many intelligent religious people, but they're all stupid.

Like I said, your generalization of your intellectual superior based on the fact that she's religious is dumber than any religion. You should look to her as an opportunity to learn and improve yourself.

My what? Where are you from? Dresden?

The rest of your post just proves that you're still conflating intelligence with smarts. I don't claim to be particularly intelligent, but I try to learn and do the best with what I have. All I can learn from Merkel is never to support my country joining the EU.

Well here's hoping you keep learning then as saying that people are stupid due to religious faith is an awfully stupid statement in and of itself. I hope you are actually able to learn and reflect on why that's dumb in the future.

And... divert, as usual. "Evangelical" doesn't mean the same thing in Germany as it does in the US-

Nope, it doesn't. HUGE difference, cannot even be compared. "Evangelical" in Germany (and other parts of Europe I assume) is leaning toward's Luther's teaching...where some dogmas of the catholic church don't apply. If you will, "evangelical" means actually less conservative Christianity, less strict..so it's pretty much the opposite what it means in the US. Also remember that in the former GDR where Merkel was raised, religion was pretty much outlawed. Surprised she is even "religious" respective says that she is.

Lets be honest, most Americans don't know shit about Donald Trump either.

Given the choice between Merkel and Trump guarantee a majority of this country would take Merkel

BTW - What the fuck is this??
The puppet-like-beautiful daughter Ivanka who, without any official position, is sitting at the table next to Merkel and praising the president: "I applaud my father for his determination to create millions of jobs."

Inappropriate is only the start. Hopefully Monday is the beginning of the end of the time we will have to tolerate this orange ass clown

Article describes her as smart and competent, yet Merkel describes herself as "a serious christian." An evangelical. In 2017. Seems like a bit of a contradiction. And why is her English so awful?

I bet it's a metric fuckton better than Trump's German.

Bah, you could poll Americans today and I doubt that 5% would know she was even German or her position/vice versa. Hell I'd be impressed if 5% of Americans could actually point out Germany on an unlabeled map.

Donald J. Trump‏Verified account @realDonaldTrump
Germany owes...vast sums of money to NATO & the United States must be paid more for the powerful, and very expensive, defense it provides to Germany!

This is such BS. First, be assured there are lots of German's who'd likely love to see American forces stationed in Germany leave.
But more importantly, making it sound as if the stationed US forces are merely benefiting Germany (Europe) for "defense"...hoag-wash.
Who benefits more from US bases, army training grounds, military hospitals etc. across Europe and in Germany? Who wants to place their missiles close to the Eastern border and who has a benefit from missiles there? Germans? Hardly.

Who benefits from US military hubs, army hospitals in Germany (or Spain, Italy, whoever)...close to the Middle East?
It's fucking ridiculous that he makes it sound their presence is like a one-sided thing which we'd "owe" and that there is not a major benefit which is mainly for the US and very little for Germany...if at all.

I wonder how many idiots believe the crap he says...respective wonder whether this guy is really so ignorant/dumb that he actually believes what he says.

Keep diverting. The thread isn't about Merkel. She knows how to act in her official capacity. Trump obviously doesn't. He's a national disgrace & the people who voted him into office are much the same.

It is about Merkel as well as Trump because without something to contrast Trump with the premise of the article is moot. She wins, Trump loses in comparison regarding world statesmanship.

Why does that article read like a leader-worshiping puff piece?

I hope Merkel doesn't let that kind of stuff go to her head.

Merkel is far from perfect but she now is the representative of "freedom" as viewed in recent history. By virtue of Trump being authoritarian by nature, he is effectively disqualified himself and his Office for the next four years.

Now now, don't start expecting him to know the first thing about religion despite declaring anyone who is religious stupid.

But Latin is a "dead" language and because dead people don't talk it stands to reason that Latin isn't spoken.

The logic is so clear, eh?

It might be a "dead" language as far as being the official language of any nation but for people to think that it is dead as in not spoken anywhere in the world they are delusional. Latin was offered as a 2nd language when I was in high school in the early 90's and I have a few friends that can actually speak it. Hell, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian are all based on Latin, kinda like how English is a form of German.

Latin is spoken. Those Catholic priests didn't gesticulate wildly before late last century.

As a converted Lutheran she would have taught classical Latin, for the purpose of studying classical authors, not speaking, or understanding Catholic priests. It's especially funny considering the nature of the protestant reformation, but funny enough on its own since nobody speaks classical Latin. Stupid.

It's also "dead" because it is not evolving. Latin is the same as a hundred years ago and before and used in its fixed form, but you and I and others understand this. Others not so much.

Who wrote this and why does he think that Americans like merkel? Reads like pure propaganda, if not for the fantastical elements, e.g. Americans respecting merkel.

Yet she can speak it, which you referred to as somehow mockingly significant. Apparently she learned a fairly difficult language which requires some intellectual capacity since "nobody speaks classical Latin".

You have turned a positive accomplishment into a negative without any justification whatsoever. Seems a rather foolish thing to attempt.
