Interesting the SS said they don’t like open air events in open carry states

Best protected people in the country and they still can’t shield from gun violence.

What does that say all you 2A absolutists?
Clearly the answer to improve security is more guns. Duh

Maybe equip Trump with a bullet proof backpack.

He got within 500meters ...

So what you're telling me is that anyone who can work reliable at 1000m could take out a former president "at will"?

Is this another SS fail?
The worst thing about this attempts will be lifting the illusion that it can't happen.

Trump will probably be asking for even more plexiglass shielding now. Gotta love that, he looks like a pathetic sad old goldfish in his glass box.

So...almost any graduate of USMC boot camp? (200, 300, 500 meters is standard)

Yeah, but that's with 5.56x45 and 7.62x51 though.

7.62x39, especially past 300m, is an entirely different matter. Been awhile since I did any distance shooting with 7.62x39, probably 2 or 3 years now. I do remember at 450ish yards the bullet drop was something like 5-6ft. Gotta lob'em in there, like rocks. Not what I'd call assassination appropriate, that's more 'miserable conscript in a ditch.' Trump is lucky he only seems to be attracting the ire of amateurs, so far.

An experienced patriot who knows how to plan and handle a sighted in .300Winmag? Different results I'd wager, and it would be just... like, idk, terrible. I guess.

not this way. not at this time. I think his assassination would really spark some true nut fury in certain parts of the country.

I think it would be....less than good.
That might be the point. They might just want to watch the country burn.
Really talks to Florida's gun laws that someone from Hawaii can show up and buy a rifle to go kill a presidential candidate.

There is an advance SS Agent assigned to check one hole ahead of the protectee to clear it before they arrive. That is when the agent saw the gun barrel poking through the chain link fence and fired at the assassin. Trump was shoved into a golf cart and whisked away to safety.
I'm glad this guy was an idiot. But it seems really stupid to have the gun visible before the target was in the desired location.

Also I read on Reddit, so take with a grain of salt, that he just bought the gun in Florida. Why would you buy that gun for this this task? Clearly there is something about the AR and AK that attracts nutbags.

You’d think they could just go back to 2016 and tell Hillary to campaign in Michigan a bit more.

Movies and internet: the primary sources of firearm knowledge for people who do not shoot or own firearms. Not having any hunting experience could explain the careless stake out and last minute choice of unfamiliar tool.

Maybe he wanted to get caught, maybe he found it preferable to scare Trump (which let's face it, pretty easy) and just skip getting double tapped by SS.

Not supporting the idea of assassinating political candidates, but dammit...if these idiots are going to shoot at Trump...I kind of wish they'd git er done right instead of feeding his legend...and giving him bumps in the polls. :p
I, for one, am afraid one of these idiots might succeed, and J. D. Vance might become President with the sympathy/revenge vote.

I think a 7.62 x 51 with an AK47 is a poor choice beyond 200m but use that same bullet with an M24.. and you can hit a watermelon at 800 meters easy with some skill.

The other speculation is that’s what he used when he went to help in Ukraine.

I mean, I hate to be that guy but that's kinda the 2A doing its job. Interesting psychological question as to why it keeps coming up republicans though (both in target and in shooter!).

maybe they can put like, an old spaceman helmet on him, like those kid's costumes from the 50s: just a big fishbowl with extra armored glass. Just convince him it's the best thing for him, and we get to watch him try to talk from within a fishbowl for the rest of his days.

win win win.

First they took away his rallies.. now they're gonna take away his golf course.

What's he gonna do? Most likely call into fox & friends therapy session all day!

The first I heard of this 'assassination' story was that reports of shots were fired outside of mar-a-lago and trump wasn't in any danger. Maybe the GQP felt it needed some dramatisation?

Hmm, and here I thought hanging around golf courses (and polling locations) with military rifles was a protected Constitutional right in Red states. Ban the Secret Service! They’re coming for your guns…

Seriously, though - at what point does a right to "open carry" flip to an imminent threat that merits shooting at the guy carrying?
Where do they draw that line? Does it only apply if a President is in the vicinity?

Is it legal to hunt deer or ducks near a golf-course?

I find it interesting that the claim is the barrel was sticking from the bushes, but the picture of where they found the gun, backpack, go pro, etc was of a chain link fence with no real bush around it.

Am curious what the go pro was for? Was he a 'social influencer' who wanted footage of an assassination simply to gain more views on YouTube?

I guess there is a lot of common options that would do the job at those ranges... I was thinking that since this is a billionaire golf club there is probably a site to look up wind conditions too...
