This is evil, but unsurprising.

Trump has just made it clear if you engage in political violence on his behalf he will pardon you. The point of this is to send a message to both allies (they will be protected) and to enemies (people are now free to target you for violence).

I think it's more that Trump came to dislike Fauci because 1) he was getting more attention than Trump and 2) made Trump look stupid sometimes.

Trump then started attacking him, which signaled to other Republicans that Fauci was now An Enemy and they took it from there.

Trump did #2 all on his own and it's what cost him the 2020 election. Is the Fauci hate a vent for some of that MAGA anger? Sure.

I'm not super confident Trump's mishandling of COVID cost him the election. I think he had spent four years royally pissing off the country and that's the primary reason for his defeat.

Not really, though yea you're probably right that this is going to be their takeaway from this.

Trump has made it clear that he will pardon you if he suspects he has more use for you. If it was otherwise he would have pardoned all these fools going out the last time. He did not.

So the question becomes... what does he need from them now?

True but there's also a rally around the flag element in an emergency. For example Bush won in 2004 despite it being pretty clear Iraq wasn't going great and was based on lies.
