I won't link to the daily mail or other similar sites because they're shit but in recent weeks some rags like dm or the nyp have covered a slimmer trump including some in action golf shots where his chest and belly are smaller. this all rides on the recent trend of eccentric American and British celebrities and wealthy people going on the new to weight loss hip drug called wegovy which is a trade name for semaglutide a compound originally developed for diabetics but has recently found a new treatment possibility.

I was talking to a friend from back home whose brother is a gp/physician serving an upper middle class area who'se become inundated with asks or asks for referrings to get onto this new drug. Ozempic has been the requested product back there which is another trades name for semaglutide. The Biden white house announced yesterday or the day before all forms of semaglitude are being considered for medicare coverage with a cap cost as the current pricing is too high if you're not wealthy or don't have very good insurance.

Not that I care what others due but the reliance on this drug with the WH now looking to cap costs makes me wonder if this is some big move by the government to get obesity rates down which are ever climbing. Although I do worry what the drug will do as time goes on. Will there be adverse issues down the line in 20 years?

Here’s a recent Ars technica article on the drug.

So far it has several benefits. Blood sugar control, appetite suppressant with attendant weight loss, strangely enough suppresses desire to drink alcohol, and heart benefits that appear greater than simply from the weight loss.

From the comments in the article stopping the drug leads to regaining all the lost weight (how that differs from rebound dieting I don’t know) and it may cause gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying).

It also costs $$$$ / month.

Still there’s a lot of upsides. Might be the new statins.

All I know is that socialized medicine is costing Democrats votes so the best way to handle this problem is for liberals to become active promoting a cull of fat people from the gene pool. I am sick and tired of them being allowed to fuck everything up. They are why we can never have good things.

You explained the reasoning in the first half of your post.

"So far it has several benefits. Blood sugar control, appetite suppressant with attendant weight loss, strangely enough suppresses desire to drink alcohol, and heart benefits that appear greater than simply from the weight loss."

Remove the drug and these come back into the equation.

I bought Novo Nordisk (the mfr of Ozempic) at $158 a couple months ago. It is now $197. Will be interesting to see where it is at next year.

Weird to see this topic, my SIL is very overweight, on the verge of a divorce, and just generally a mess.

My FIL has really glommed on to Ozempic as some sort of cure-all for her issues, despite being otherwise extremely skeptical of the medical establishment and big pharma etc.

Wonder if they're working over the Fox News crowd hard with their advertising etc.

Its $$$ right now cause there its only produced by Novo but I understand that competing compounds are already in trials from the competition, so...
And yea, levels your blood sugar, anti inflammatory and even suppresses alcohol cravings?
Wonder drug?

I really wish the left would stop obsessing over Trumps physical characteristics. I get he's an easy target but it's gotten pretty old.

The difficult problem is that it's turned into a 'craze'. Everybody wants it for various reason as the articles points out. Even though I take a different injectable GLP-1 mimetic (Victoza), it is become difficult for pharmacies to keep any of this class of drugs in stock. My doctor and Endo suggested using Mounjaro, not only for my diabetes, but also to help me get down to a much healthier weight. Demand is far in excess of supply and insurance isn't covering it even for diabetics. If you have $$$$s x 2+, you can get it. I don't have that to spend every month or I would. Long term benefits are just much better than my current med.

- I stake a claim on the following topic 5 years from now "Ozempic killing people, court documents show tomfoolery during trials, unanticipated side effects"

I was banking on 'medication unexpectedly causes larger firmer erections - feel like you're in 20s again!' No go

I've already admitted several people with Ozempic side effects. - several with acute pancreatitis and one with acute renal failure. They got better, thankfully.
As I understand it, sides are more common if you're diabetic.

Nonsense...Trump doesn't need drugs to slim down...after all...he's 6'-3," and 215 lbs.

My gawd...if he was any slimmer, he'd look like a skeleton.

Wife is taking this drug and has so far lost 25 lbs. Getting on it myself soon as I'm overweight and borderline diabetic.

The drug has gotten so popular the highest dose was out of stock across the country for almost 2 months.

It's expensive though, costing about $1K per month. Insurance will usually only cover if prescribed for diabetes, which makes no sense since weight loss tends to prevent diabetes to begin with.

If a medication is running out, then there needs to be something like a triage system. Diabetics (DM) need it more than people who are obese, people who are obese need it more than those who are overweight, etc. But this is 'merica, so no. Once the new factories come online, it won't be an issue. Insurance companies are trying to prevent, what will be for them, a short term financial disaster. Having to provide these expensive medications for multiple different classes of medical conditions could cause their outlays to increase by many times compared to now. That'll kill allot of their profits. Of course, in the long term - they'll have lower costs because of reduced complications from obesity and diabetes - that doesn't matter while, in the meantime, their stock prices drop by 50% or more.

Is this the first fatality?

In a statement to The Independent, a UK-based spokesperson for Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical company that manufactures Ozempic, said that they do not support Ozempic specifically for weight loss and that the safety of their patients is “paramount.”

“Gastrointestinal (GI) events are well-known side effects of the GLP-1 class. For semaglutide, most GI side effects were mild to moderate in severity and of short duration. The gastrointestinal events led to permanent treatment discontinuation in 4.3% of patients. GLP-1s are known to cause a delay in gastric emptying, as noted in the label. Delayed gastric emptying, nausea and vomiting are listed as side effects within the SMPC.”

-Ehhh article specifically mentions she swapped out to some other random weight loss thing for the last two months before she died and who knows what else she was up to trying to lose weight.

I'm on team "weight for more details"
