and she needs a safe space.

http://news.nationalpost.com/news/c...ing-donald-trump-make-america-great-again-hat

Concern over “safe spaces” at a Calgary university boiled over into a confrontation this week between two students, one of whom was wearing a ‘Make America Great Again’ hat.

The incident — in which a female student at Mount Royal University insists that a male remove the hat commonly worn by Donald Trump supporters — came to light Thursday after a video emerged online.

In it the woman approaches a man asking him to take the hat off, arguing the slogan stands for hate language. The man refuses, insisting that he is in a public place and has the right to freedom of expression. He rejects the suggestion that it’s a hateful message.

The video ends shortly after another student, apparently a friend of the hat wearer, snatches the hat away.

Security responded to the confrontation, but no sanctions are being contemplated.

Melanie Rogers, a spokeswoman for Mount Royal University, said officials are aware of the video but would not comment on specifics.

“Mount Royal University respects individuals who exercise their constitutionally-protected right to freedom of expression, as long as it is peaceful and respectful,” Rogers said.

Since the video appeared online, the woman taking issue with the hat has posted a Facebook response explaining her concerns.

“Today (Wednesday) I got into an altercation with a guy wearing a ‘Make America Great Again’ hat. I went up and asked him if he would take the hat off, explaining a university should be a safe space,” she said.

“It was impossible to communicate to him why wearing a hat in support of a movement grown on the seeds of racism, bigotry and exclusion of diversity (sexual and cultural) could make some people afraid,” she added.

Students and campuses across North America have been urging the creation of ‘safe spaces,’ ensuring all students are protected from intolerance. In some instances, critics have deemed them to be an exercise in political correctness.

Postmedia has reached out to both parties involved in the confrontation but they were not immediately available for comment.

aww, poor little snowflake just can't deal with the real world.

The names of the 2 people have been published and I found a facebook page about it and other things going on at the University:

I can't believe something this stupid is happening at so called higher education institutions. The real world is going to eat kids like her alive.

I didn't see it.

and name calling is childish.

You literally called someone a snowflake in your OP and then whined about name calling. Lol.

I mean the girl isn't wrong, the hat does represent a racist, still, people have the right to support racists.

It is not whether "the hat has a racist message" or not. It's about a retard who is making a political statement in a school, and IMHO this is not the place for this.

And...IF you make a political statement in a place that should be neutral, then don't be surprised about the consequences either when you (OH NOES!) discover that not everyone agrees with you.

He posted it deep within another thread, hardly a repost.

Funny how you support his hat being taken, which is theft. Then you make a bigoted comment, while voicing your opinion that the slogan on the hat is racist. And you make fun of retarded people, class act. And all the deplorables are Trump fans? Do you suppose Cap's right to kneel? I do. If you do, and don't support his rights to wear this hat, then you're even more hypocritical than you already are.

Oh you mean making a political statement at a place that should remain neutral like say, Black Lives Matter at the University of Missouri? Glad you agree.

I called her a snowflake but didn't mention anyone on the forums.

I insulted nobody here.

So basically it's up the the Colleges to determine if they want to allow political expression or not.

I like it that those young adults are engaging in and are being expressive of their political awareness.

It's a good thing.

the phrase itself is not hateful, but unfortunately its been associated with a very hateful man and an angry voter base.

Sorta like how Hitler ruined the swastika, it cant be used anymore without upsetting people.

Of course, on a college campus, you need to learn how to deal with things like an adult. Especially things you dont agree with.

Is your concern over political statements within an educational institution... or political statement that you personally don't like within an educational institution? I guarantee it's the latter. If a college student was wearing an Obama hat back in 2007, and someone disagreed with that and demanded it be removed, what would your personal reaction be?

Just say you want Trump and his supporters silenced and be done with it. Don't try to justify it with statements you cannot back up. I'd actually respect you more if you just stated your opinion, instead of believing you need to hide it under that pile you wrote.

Umm, you honestly think Canadian and American colleges are neutral spaces not meant for making political statements or having disagreements?

Stop and think really hard about that for a couple minutes.

Exactly! Demand officially sanctioned safe spaces or else protest the college administration. It's what normal adults do.

She's fine. And flannel shirted guy needs his arse whooped.

She needs her ass whipped for being a dumbass. Nothing she said was true, NOTHING!!!! She was parroting what she as heard other people say, nothing more.

Perfect example of an uneducated voter not listening to both sides of the story. Probably reads huffpost daily, but has not taken the time to listen to trump.

Anyone who has actually listened to Trump would know that he is a racist. It's not like he tries to hide his racism.

Seems like she had him pegged perfectly.

Trump supporters have a right to display it, and others have a right to ridicule and disparage them for it.
