Am I surprised by this? No. We all knew who Trump was BEFORE the 2016 election. Recall him disparaging John McCain for being captured. I am disgusted by how far Trump and the people who voted for him have driven down the decency level of this country. Maybe my TDS is showing again??

Luis Avila, who served five combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, was left almost completely paralyzed by the detonation of an improvised explosive device in 2011.

Avila's bio on the Gary Sinise Foundation's website says that he had his leg amputated after the attack and suffered two strokes, two heart attacks and brain damage as a result of his injuries.

It rained that day, and the ground was soft; at one point Avila's wheelchair threatened to topple over. Milley's wife, Hollyanne, ran to help Avila, as did Vice President Mike Pence,

After Avila's performance, Trump walked over to congratulate him, but then said to Milley, within earshot of several witnesses, 'Why do you bring people like that here? No one wants to see that, the wounded.' Never let Avila appear in public again, Trump told Milley."

You are talking about a narcissistic psychopath who had bone spurs. Anything he does not want to see will be something he will project you don’t want to see because the last thing he would see is the ugly truth about himself, his envy.

I have suggested that when people are put down and made to feel shamefully evil, they repress all self awareness of that’s how they feel. But to feel worthless and not be conscious that you do makes our inner lives miserable.

What is it we know about misery? It is that it loves company. The type to which that applies are those who had it so bad they developed Stockholm syndrome. Those less damaged preserved the capacity to hate bullies. And while that is healthier than the Stockholm situation it still requires internalizing the experience of being told you are guilty of sins.

And to think pcgeek11 voted for Trump twice

I think it's a mistake to go with the past tense with this one. There are multiple people on this forum who act like they won't vote for Trump (or his nearest equivalent) but their opinions pre and post Trump are no different.

I posit that this decency of theirs was just a mask to wear for polite society.
Deep down, this was them all along. Does not matter how many Americans Trump will hurt, they will just cheer him on.
After all, their goal in life is not to be a good American, or a decent person. It is to be part of the Cult of Trump. A worthy worshiper for their new religion, with the Orange one as their god.

Ready to queue up the excuses?

Blame the media

Blame Milley even though we don’t know who revealed this anecdote. Multiple people heard it

Blame it on TDS

I think likely response is try to ignore the story or just deny it taking a chance neither Pence or Milley will publicly confirm story. One thing we do know neither Trump or any of his supporters really care about our troops.

Again, this is why it's important for people to speak up WHEN IT HAPPENS, not years later. It gives too much ammunition to his supporters to say it's just heresay, or sour grapes, or lies, etc.

Dude, don't you remember the "he's (Trump) not hurting the right people" comments from his supporters?

They want us dead. Literally.

The cowardice of the GOP old guard is exactly why we are in this mess in the first place. Well, mostly so. Rest of the blame goes to human nature. Our base instincts are far worse than Americans give ourselves credit for. Very little separates us from the likes of Russia, North Korea, or the Taliban. Very little. Which makes it all the more important to hold onto the values we do claim to possess. It is all too easy for madmen to dispense with them, rip off the mask, and make monsters of us all. As Trump has done to the GOP.

Not shocked, but it's moving the needle. This kind of shit is baked into feelings about him.

What's the old saying - we're only a couple missed meals from total barbarism?

But when people tell you they are voting for someone because they want them to hurt you and your family, believe them.

What needle? Half the country thinks this kind of behavior is ok, or justified, or just won't believe it.

It's beyond hilarious that conservatives will blame those two teens killing that cyclist on "moral decay," but then turn around and enthusiastically continue to support Trump and the dehumanization of their fellow citizens. Can't even make this shit up.

Figure of speech.

No one is changing any opinion of him based on this.

In defense of Trump, he kinda is America's walking id.

That's how societally we see Veterans. They should all be ruggedly handsome, stoic and quiet cause of all the war they've seen, but at most maybe have a really cool manly scar across their face.

The reality, the broken down guy who got his legs blown off by an IED while driving a supply truck in Afghanistan, the guy who sounds like a raving lunatic who has a bunch of TBIs thanks to repeated mortaring of his FOB, the dude who has PTSD cause he got spooked and accidentally shot a kid.

We don't want to see those people, no one wants to see those people. Brush them all under a rug, because they reflect our shame back on us. They completely shatter that heroic mythos built around our armed forces.

I've recounted a few stories about my dad and his shell shock from WWII.
it's true, it was expected for a soldier to quietly fade away and frequently in the bottle.
